With another couple we enjoyed a lovely leisurely lunch at Black Barn on 2 January. The setting is its best feature. Dining under the vines is bliss. Especially on the lovely sunny day we had. The food was very good. The char grilled eye fillet was so good a second main was ordered! I had the fish of the day which was good too.
The only thing that lets this restaurant down is the service. We started with the bread and just as we finished, our entrees were brought to us. Despite that we had no more bread left the plates were not cleared. We had to ask for water on several occasions and it was some wait before we got it. Two empty wine bottles sat on the table for some time.
The service lacks the professionalism that you would expect at a lovely place like this.
We didn’t feel we had to move on, which was good, and stayed four and a half hours.
Apart from the average service everything else about this place is great and we always dine here while in the Hawkes Bay. Definitely recommend it for the setting.
