Description: Open for lunches and Friday evenings for dinner, Black Barn Bistro is the perfect place to spend an hour or two absorbing the atmosphere of Wine Country. It is in the heart of the vineyard surrounded by vines and a table on the large generous veranda lets you look right out across the region. In warmer weather a courtyard covered by a canopy of grapes is also a perfect place to enjoy lunch and a glass of wine. The restaurant menu is light, fresh and delicious. There is an emphasis on freshly grown Hawkes Bay produce, the selection changes with the seasons. The bistro is available for private functions, evening and during the day, it is also the perfect venue for a very limited number of weddings, for bookings or enquiries please give us a call.

“Excellent setting for a long lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

With another couple we enjoyed a lovely leisurely lunch at Black Barn on 2 January. The setting is its best feature. Dining under the vines is bliss. Especially on the lovely sunny day we had. The food was very good. The char grilled eye fillet was so good a second main was ordered! I had the fish of the day which was good too.
The only thing that lets this restaurant down is the service. We started with the bread and just as we finished, our entrees were brought to us. Despite that we had no more bread left the plates were not cleared. We had to ask for water on several occasions and it was some wait before we got it. Two empty wine bottles sat on the table for some time.
The service lacks the professionalism that you would expect at a lovely place like this.
We didn’t feel we had to move on, which was good, and stayed four and a half hours.
Apart from the average service everything else about this place is great and we always dine here while in the Hawkes Bay. Definitely recommend it for the setting.

“Good food, good service, amazing views.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2013

As you'de expect the restaurant looks out over the winery, the view is to die for. The restaurant itself is very high class and with a great atmosphere. I had one of the best pasta dishes i've ever eaten, snapper on a chorizo and cream pasta. My wife had lamb with potatoes, olives, sun dried tomatoes and tapenade. The tapenade was over loaded with anchovy and the lamb seemed a bit over cooked and slightly tough. It was better than average though and my meal was awesome which is what counts!! Wine was decently priced by the glass. Staff were attentive and friendly.

“Average at best ...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

I had been looking forward to a meal at Black Barn Bistro since we decided to go to the Hawkes Bay for a break. The setting is fantastic and it was lovely sitting outside under the vines.
The place was full and we had to wait half an hour for a table - this was not a problem as we sampled some delicious wines and looked at the art gallery.
Perhaps it was because they were so busy, it was a couple of days after new year, but the whole experience was average at best. The wait staff were very busy and did their best but we felt neglected - lack of water, cutlery, menus etc.
Unfortunately we were sitting near the service desk in the corner so got to hear the maitre'd complaining to the wait staff about what they had and hadn't done - and also about how busy he was upstairs - I would have to say this was not very professional and those conversations should not take place within earshot of patrons.
The food was average - between that and the lacklustre service we decided to flag coffee and dessert and left as soon as we had finished our mains.
As I said - perhaps they were having a bad day - there are obviously many other customers who have been very happy with their experience based on the reviews of this restaurant.

“Great food”

The food was excellent, the service slow and unresponsive. It was a bit overpriced. However, overall we had a good time and would probably return.
