My two dogs & I have vacationed @ Barkwells for the last several years, twice in the spring, once in the fall, and every summer in between. The property sits in the rolling N.C. mountains and sports beautiful log cabins, except for the original house. I have stayed in several different cabins, (all named after dogs) which have at least two bedrooms, (some with lofts for a 3rd BR) Wi-Fi, satellite TV, gas fireplace, hot tub and just about everything you will need for a comfortable stay. Each cabin is completely fenced in, with a doggie door, and the entire ~8 acres outside of your own cabin is also fenced with a pond (with fish), which my water dogs loved (not the fish—the water). The location is very close to the Asheville airport, the Biltmore Estate, only about 20 minutes from the town of Asheville, and close to Hendersonville, Brevard, the mountains and everything it has to offer. Yet there are plenty of restaurants, shopping and movie theaters if you so desire. All these amenities and luxury, however, do not come cheaply. A 5-day stay will cost over $1000, and a typical stay is a minimum of 2-3 days. There is, however, a discount for a full week, and in the winter months. If you are interested, book early. Spring though the Fall fills up quickly.

Made the trip with my Husband and 4 dogs. The cabins were clean and beautiful. It was the most fun you could possibly have in the mountains of NC. I've gone back again and it was as good as the last trip. I have a trip planned for Christmas time this year and we are hoping for snow. I can highly recommend Barkwells. You will not be disapppointed.

We had a great stay with our two dogs. The cabin was clean, cozy and had a beautiful christmas tree. The in-room massage was awesome!

We were looking for a cabin setting in the mountains where we could take our 3 dogs. When I found Barkwells online, it looked absolutely perfect--and it was! Upon arrival, the friendly owners checked us in to Baxter's Cabin and gave us fresh chicken eggs from the property. There were also wild blackberries and fresh mint growing next to our cabin that we were told to help ourselves to. The cabin was spotless (you could never tell dogs stayed there) and was well stocked with anything we could need to cook, grill, and enjoy a relaxing vacation. The best part was being able to leave the dogs there at the cabin and travel to nearby Asheville or Hendersonville to shop, see Biltomore Estate, etc. for the day. We celebrated our anniversary during our stay and it was so lovely to be able to enjoy a nice evening out without worrying about hurrying back to let the dogs out. They had their own doggie door so they could go in and out at thier leisure (each cabin has its own fenced in yard on the property). Our dogs' favorite part of the day was running in the BIG yard--all 7 acres or so that are totally fenced in. Every other guest we met on our trip was very friendly, but the cabin was secluded enough that we felt like we had privacy. The cabins at Barkwells are the perfect combination of having luxurious amentites, yet making you feel right at home. For everything you get at Barkwells, and the fact you don't have to pay anyone to watch your dogs, this is a great value for the money. We can't wait to go back again!!

I'm finally getting around to writing a review, but to cut to the chase, we've already booked our next visit for May 2010!

We HATE leaving our dogs behind when we travel, so this was a perfect fit for us. First off, the owners and staff are fabulous and go out of their way to make you and your dogs feel comfortable and welcome. The cabins themselves are great. Extremely clean upon check in - you'd never know that there are always dogs staying in them! Furthermore, they are all situated perfectly to give you privacy, which is nice when you're relaxing in the hot tub.

The grounds were impeccably clean and well maintained. It is so nice to have a place to let your dogs run totally free. We would tire the dogs out early in the a.m., and then head out on our own later, knowing that they were comfortably sleeping back at the cabin. So many other "pet friendly" places have very specific rules about not leaving dogs unattended, but at Barkwells it was OK to do so and it made things so much more relaxing and enjoyable for us.

I thought the location was great, as far as Asheville, Biltmore, Lake Lure/Chimney Rock, Hendersonville, Brevard, etc. It's a bit of a drive to GSMNP and Gatlinburg, but there is just so much other great hiking and things to do nearby anyway. (Note: dogs are not allowed on most hiking trails in GSMNP). It was great to come home at the end of the day and relax on our porch/in the hot tub.

We unfortunately had horrible weather the week we were there in Sept 2009, but we knew right away that we wanted to give the area another shot this Spring, and hopefully we'll get much better weather. Without hesitation, we booked another week at Barkwells.

My only complaint (if you want to call it that) and the reason I rated the rooms only a "4" is that the couches in the cabin we stayed in weren't the most comfortable. There was one chair w/ ottoman which was fine, but the couch was more of a loveseat-sized futon-type of furniture, and wasn't great for laying down/stretching out. But all in all, a minor inconvenience as far as I'm concerned - afterall, I didn't go on vacation to lay around on a couch all week!

Highly recommend Barkwells, even if you're not traveling with pets!
