“A quiet and relaxing escape”
Reviewed November 27, 2009

We stayed in the B&B, which is a wing of hosts Steve and Barbara’s house. It is very well appointed and very comfortable – we had a great night’s sleep. The hosts’ living area is quite separate, and they were very welcoming and even showed us the separate cabin, which is also very well appointed (great bathroom and kitchen) and features lots of beautiful woodwork. The buildings are surrounded by bush and hence very private, and we saw and heard birds being drawn to the lovely gardens that have been planted to attract them. Barbara’s afternoon tea was tasty and breakfast was quite a feast of food and drink. We picked out hosts brains about the history of the area, and things to see and do, and they came up with some good ideas.

We took a drive down the road to the waters edge and the wharf, passing residential homes and many holiday houses. There is a lovely view from both sides of the port (south east and south west) and we saw a bush track that looked enticing but we were short of time. We also went for a ride on the Ida Bay Railway, about 12 -15 minutes drive away. That was very interesting and quite fun.

We reckon that this is the place to be alone and quiet, but not too far from things to do, without being crowded or commercial (or ‘twee’). You don’t have to set eyes on anyone else if you don’t want to. Great for bird watchers. We were worried that the weather might be a bit too heavy. In the end it was fine, but we noticed there seem to be plenty of games and books inside anyway.

It's hard to fault Southern Forest because it really did meet all our expectations, and the comfort level was greater than we had expected.

Superb host made us feel at home at once. Knew the area very well so we were given many tips.Wonderful garden and our accommodation first class. Welcome cup of tea and cakes on arrival. Breakfasts varied on each day of our stay.

What a place to live. A must during a trip to Tasmania.
