“Another World Wonder”

We stopped to take pictures at Emerald Lake and my fear was that the hundreds of photos I took would never do it justice. The lake is surrounded by beautiful tall healthy trees protecting several shades of breathtaking green water. One of the most magnificent places I ever visited.

We didn't actually stop here, but it is a uniquely coloured beautiful lake along the main road from Whitehorse to Carcross

“Like a jewel sparkling uniquely on the landscape....”

Located on the South Klondike Highway at kilometer 117.5 (mile 73.5), measured from Skagway, AK. Hired a rental car and did this day excursion from the cruise ship and were advised nicely by Canadian Border Control, that this lake is as far as visitors should go based on a ships schedule.

It did not disappoint although the lake is not as accessible as some others on the drive to Emerald and is much smaller. To get the full effect, this body of water is best viewed from the adjacent highway. Keep an eye out for passing traffic as there's not a lot of room on the side of the road to get out and take photos (perhaps protected pullover spots needed). A little turning as you head south again will take you down nearer the lake, which we didn't do. Time was a factor for the drive back to Skagway after visiting nearby Carcross.

An off white mixture of silt deposit called marl, gives light reflecting qualities in the shallow portions, darkening to a more emerald colour as the water deepens.
With light and shadow varying throughout the day it would have several changes of colour and the whole effect is stunning! Mountains and trees add further to a magical setting.

We didn't see any small boats or kayakers on the water and a few nice homes have been built on higher ground above the lake. Also didn't notice if any picnic areas were set aside to enjoy this beautiful location.

It's not a place you can spend a lot of time visiting, as there are other beautiful lakes on the drive along the South Klondike Highway before getting here. However, none as are unique as this lake and it’s definitely worth the drive.

Enjoy your visit!
