“Milepost”
Reviewed July 10, 2009

The hotel lobby displays a much-weathered Alaska Highway milepost (I think it is 971),but the sight of the receptionist is of more practical value. She was most helpful with local information, and with computer access.
We stayed on a weekday night and cannot comment about any possible weekend entertainments.Although an old wooden building,it did not seem particularly bad for noise transmission, and the traffic was not a problem at night. The renovated room was clean and well fitted, with a good bed.
The downtown location is within a short walk of the shopping area, and, what is of more interest, the very pleasant riverside park.

We were very happy with this hotel. The bed was very comfortable and our room was spotless. The location was fine with lots of parking and close proximity to attractions.

We stayed one night on our Trip to Whitehorse in this Hotel. The Hotel itself is comfortable and the Room was clean. The Front desk Personal was helpful when we arrived. In the evening/night there was livemusic in the Restaurant and the music could be heard in most of the Rooms. The Hotel management was very reluctant to our request for an other Room, because we could not sleep. After several Times and request we were told no other Room is available. Finally we got an other Room, which was only a little bit better. Facit is: The Rooms are very noisy in case there is Music in the Restaurant. We will not book this Hotel on our next Trip again.

Stayed at the BW despite reading the mixed reviews.
A good experience on the whole. Room had been recently renovated, was large, great beds and large tv. All extras available.
Situated in the centre parking easy although I visited out of main season.
Only minus point was the restaurant which was combined with the bar. a bit dingy and very limited menu. The restaurant next door is better.

  • Liked — large room, easy internet, good bed
  • Disliked — no air conditioning, lift slow

I have stayed several times at the Gold Rush Inn. There's a great business opportunity in Whitehorse for a really good hotel, but until someone takes up that challenge, I will come back to this as the most reliable. Basic, but reliable.

I too have my stories from this hotel, but it is the great white north after all. Just be glad you're not carrying all your worldly possessions on your back after a two month trek over the pass in your socks. Consider it part of the experience.

Front desk service has improved a lot, the location can't be beat, and they've fit as many TVs as humanly possible into the bar where you can often strike up an interesting converstaion.

Booked a non smoking room. Arrived, went to my room and was greeted by a stale smoke odour, then saw the ashtray and matches on the table by the bed. Great non smoking room. Went to the front desk and explained the situation. They explained that I was mistaken, that it was a non smoking room! I asked about the ashtrays, they mumbled something about it being a mistake. I requested a different room, they told me nothing else was available.
So back to the room I go. Maybe I can air it out a bit. Hmm, ground floor room facing the street. Any hotel I have been in before with this setup would have some type of security on the window - not this hotel. If I even just crack the window open, someone can slide the window open and hop right in the room. So much for sleeping with the window open for some fresh air. Thinking it can't get much worse than this - it does. The thumping begins, there is a bar/nightclub sharing the wall with my room... Being a seasoned traveler however, I do have earplugs in my bag. So I settle down to a wonderful night's rest - ears stuffed with earplugs, and nose stuffed up from stale smoke.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the hourly whoosh of water from the leaky toilet refilling (again, earplugs to the rescue).

I then spend the night waking every couple hours for fear of sleeping in (the drawback of earplugs, can't hear the alarm).

The next morning I needed to iron a shirt, there was an ironing board but no iron in the room. A call to the front desk locates one for me, however no one is willing to bring it to my room, I have to go to the front and get it myself. Which in and of itself normally would not be a big deal, but after everything else it sure feels like a big deal.

So all in all, if you want to stay in a place with old run down rooms and no idea what the words "customer service" mean, this is the place for you.

Had booked a trip with Air North on a 3 day package and called to validate the room, talked to Bev at the Hotel and she noticed that a far better room was available and she arranged to have our upgrade to the new room that had a King size bed and a Jacuzzi tub for no extra cost. Everyone was very hospitable and made the whole experience very wonderful.
I would refer others to this Hotel no questions asked.
