“A gem of a place in Tadoussac”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We stayed here for three nights at the end of August while exploring the Saguenay area, and we wished we could have stayed a lot longer! The rooms were perfect - we not only had our own bathroom, but a view over the Saguenay Fjord where a beluga was spotted during our stay. The location was great - a short walk from where the whale-watching cruises left, and also next to the path leading to a headland where we spent a couple of mornings watching a minke whale swim around 20m away.

Marie-Josée was a wonderful host too: warm and welcoming on arrival, friendly and engaging over the delicious breakfast and full of great advice - thanks to her we were able to see Baie St-Marguerite which otherwise we would have missed out on. Not only that but she loaned us adapters for plug sockets; had a computer for us to use to print out necessary information; and even did a load of washing for us.

All told, the Auberge la Sainte Paix was a real highlight of our whole trip. We would definitely return there and would recommend it highly to all.

Oh People of Belgium!

Indeed, Baie-Ste-Maguerite is a place that is really to discover as the Cap-Bon-Désir or the Discovery Center marine environment at Escoumins. Sand dunes also remains a nice surprise for our visitors.

Thank you for being with us and come see us!

My daughter and I spent two nights at Auberge la Sainte Paix and were very pleased. We has a wonderful stay and would certainly return again if we are in the area. Marie-Josée was a perfect hostess!

We stayed in two rooms - the St. Laurent and the Saguenay. The rooms, while small, were very comfortable, spotlessly fresh and clean and well appointed. One note: the bathrooms are quite small, and the showers are narrow. It would not be a concern for most, but if you are a large person or quite heavy, you may be uncomfortable. Other reviewers did note that the walls are thin - it was not a problem for us at all. The inn was full while we were there and the noise level was almost non existent, other than in the morning when people are getting ready for their day. Other reviewers are correct in noting that the river views are now semi obstructed by a large information center built on water. Still, the views are beautiful and we saw whales from our room. The house is one of the original homes in the town, so there a some history!

The breakfast both days were amazing- we were offered two choices each day - crepes, waffles, eggs with bacon - delicious maple butter and jams. The hosts do ask that you reserve a time for breakfast but that was not a problem at all for us. We loved that breakfast is made to order - not set out ahead of time, so everything is fresh and delicious. Marie-Josee made it a point to introduce us to other guests at breakfast- we met travelers from France, Italy, Belgium, Germany and Canada (we are from the US). From the dining room, we saw beluga whales too.

A few nice surprises - there is free wifi, access to a computer and printer (helpful if you need to print boarding passes) AND - the rooms have small mini fridge, so you can keep picnic lunches and other treats cold. We had lunch on the patio overlooking the river! And the location, right in the lower part of town, makes it a quite little oasis away from the highway and noise of the upper part of town. Everything is a quick, easy walk.

We hope to come back and spend more time - there is so much to to in the area - hiking, bird watching, whale watching (a must!!).

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floors - there are three, two with a river view. My daughter and I staye...

We pleased to welcome you during your road trip!

You describe well our services and atmosphere of our hostel: visitors from all over, good atmosphere, people picnic outside away from the noise of Route 138 (Street Bateau-Passeur ), small fridges to keep shopping food cool and a more than respectable soundproofing. It is certain that our showers may seem small to some people but they are standarts.

We believe you again and it will be a real pleasure.

We stayed in Auberge la Sainte Paix for 2 nights, we had the room called "Cale-Seche" with a private bathroom and a good view to the river.
We had very good time here, especially because of the hospitality and a good feeling with the owners, Marie-Josèe and Ken, in fact she helped us to book the ferry to Gaspesie and to book the whale watching experience. The breakfast is very good, also the quebecoise one!
Everything is well organized, clean and nice; wifi and internet available for free and also the parking.
If you go there, don't forget to plan an escursion with Zodiac for whale watching!

We left Marie-Josée and Ken this morning after two nights. The location is perfect for getting to the harbour for your whale watching trip, or exploring Tadoussac.

We stayed in room 1888 which was very comfortable for the four of us. Our private bathroom was located at the bottom of the stairs but this really did not pose a problem as room 1888 is the only room upstairs in that part of the house.

The breakfasts were tasty, with views of belugas out in the fjord.

Must say that this was probably the cleanest place we have ever stayed, and Marie-Josée a perfect host. We look forward to returning to Tadoussac and Ste Paix, possibly sooner than 14 years time!!!

Merci beaucoup!!!! :-)

Obviously, we hope to see you before the next 14 years!

Thank you infinitely for your comment inter alia, the cleanliness of the place. This is a very important thing for us.

Our room 1888 is greatly appreciated families: be able to sleep at 5 in the same room and to find 3 beds, it is not always easy to find.

Good continuity to your family!

I just spent four nights at Auberge la Sainte Paix -our hostess, Marie, was wonderful. And what a fabulous cook! Breakfast was my favorite time of day as we ate her delicious crepes and watched the beluga whales swimming in the Saguenay from the dining room windows. Marie also booked our whale watching tours for us and recommended local restaurants for dinner. The rooms were spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The back garden had lots of flowers in bloom and was a relaxing place to sit and read, or catch up on your email with the free wi-fi. The side deck had a view of the Sageunay as well and other guests were lounging there to watch the belugas. The CIMM center is just around the corner - we spent a fabulous day there with their wonderful english speaking naturalist. I never knew there was so much to learn about whales!! I highly recommend that you stay at la Sainte Paix any time you are in the Tadoussac area.

Room Tip: There are two rooms with a view of the Saguenay - you can watch the belugas all day long!

Thank you very much for this wonderful comment.

We believe that you enjoyed our location: garden, proximity and views of the fjord with some whales premium.

The Marine Mammal Interpretation Centre (CIMM) is a great place to learn more about our whales and, in French, English and some information in several languages.

And thank you so enjoyed our breakfasts and recommend us!

Until next time ...

My wife and I strongly recommend the Auberge la Sainte Paix. We had a wonderful time there. It was quiet, clean, and restful. The best part was the company of the owner, Marie-Josee. She was truly helpful in every respect, whether it came to helping us plan which whale-watching trip to book, make the booking, tell us the local weather report, give us information about nearby villages, where to hike or bird-watch, etc, etc. We appreciated her cheerful manner. The breakfasts she prepared for us each morning were excellent. She was very good at making introductions at the breakfast table each morning so that everyone felt welcome. Marie-Josee went out of her way to be helpful – e.g., when two guests were delayed on the road by a traffic accident, she drove out at around 11 pm to guide them from the ferry drop-off point to the hotel. (By the way, one of the most fun parts of going to Tadoussac is traveling there – the road from Quebec dead-ends into a ferry, which plies the short width of the river very frequently. The view of the Saguenay River from the ferry is spectacular.)

We stayed in the Cale Seche room upstairs. It was clean and well-maintained, with a very nice bathroom. The only negative thing was the small size of the room. For example, it required a bit of maneuvering for the two of us to pack our suitcases at the same time. To compensate for that, however, there was a nice view of the Saguenay River from our window. The web-site indicates which two rooms have a view of the river. And the price of the room was very reasonable.

One word of caution: we went to Tadoussac the last week of May. Coming from the Washington DC area, we did not expect the chill in the air. We often needed two shirts and a sweater – Canadian summer without doubt doesn’t start later than it does in DC. The end of May is still a beautiful time to come, since the town is uncrowded. (We had gone to Tadoussac around two years ago in August, and it had much more an atmosphere of a bustling resort town.)

So overall, I’d recommend the Auberge. You'll enjoy making the acquaintance of Marie-Josee and enjoying the beautiful town of Tadoussac.

Wow! What a great comment with some interesting remarks.

As an example, it is always important to inform the weather of Tadoussac is cool even in summer because of the sea better provide a little bit of everything: jackets, shorts, swimsuit, long pants, sandals, closed-toe shoes, hat and gloves when you go whale watching.

It is true that the room Cale-Sèche has lost some of its grandeur with the development of the bathroom but it was the price to pay for a complete private en-suite bathroom.

When the hostess, made you blush with pleasure!

See you soon
