I worry when in a tourist section that the food will be bad and service is terrible. Not the case for this Auberge (a hotel that serves meals) on the Grande Alleè. We decided to go in as the place was packed with many french speakers. Service was fast and efficient. We quickly had glasses of water and were talking with our server. He was very accommodating with my gluten free needs as he replaced the orzo pasta with mashed potatoes. My friends had the recommended rack of lamb and the shrimp and mussels dish. The meals were tasty, hot and thoroughly enjoyed. My friend with the mussels dish even was given a beer that nicely accompanied her dinner. The ambiance was very Quebec and we very much enjoyed ourselves.

We just got lucky with this place. We were wandering this street on our first night in Quebec City and walked into this gem. We checked out the menu on the sidewalk and it looked good. We were looking for classic french, but not super fancy. This seemed to fit the bill. Once we entered, we saw the dining rooms were pretty full, and looked pretty nice. We were under-dressed for the place, and had our baby along, which looked like a poor fit. So I was thinking we would probably move on. But we were greeted very graciously. We indicated no reservation, with a baby, and the staff very much took that in stride and worked us in in a way that was good for everyone. They ushered us to a private dining room upstairs. Just big enough for the five of us. A very nice, quiet, private room. Where our lack of appropriate attire and our baby would bother no one.

Our waiter did a very nice job of taking care of whatever we needed. The wine list is really good. It's not a value list, but has lots of stand-out bottles and some bottles that are more pedestrian but still very good. The food was as expected. Classic, fairly simple French food. Well-prepared. Not a lot of creativity, but basically classic dishes done the right way. The duck confit was excellent in particular.

This was a really good, really lucky experience.

Louis-Herbert is located on a block of restaurants, some more fashionable than others. I understand the restaurant has been open for years and after our dinner it is clear why. The food was excellent and not too expensive in what is a very expensive city. Know that entrees in this town routinely go for $30 to $35. It is annoying paying these prices when the food is mediocre, but at least here the food is first rate. There are two dining areas in addition to the outdoor terrace. We ate in the older wood paneled room with low ceilings and thick walls. There is a contemporary space in the back with a more open feel. Take your pick, they are both attractive. There is a reasonably priced wine list. The table d'hote selections were of interest, but we ordered off the full menu. I had duck, my wife scallops. They were both well prepared if not the most original of offerings. Service was friendly, attentive and not intrusive. When we return to Quebec this will definitely be on our list of places to dine again.

Sat on the patio on a night of perfect weather. The restaurant was quite crowded. Daily table d'hotes were interesting and a reasonable value. I had a basic green mixed salad and roasted duck with vegetables. Both dishes were excellent, light, flavourful and well prepared. Service was a bit slow but overall worth a return visit.

Recommended to the 4 of us by the waitress in the bar at the Loews Hotel, this restaurant was in very close proximity to our hotel and in an old stone building with lots of charm on the outside. Modern on the inside, we were seated near the back of the restaurant. Service was a team effort and very good. The food was so amazing, we had to take pictures of it. The lobster and the duck entrees were simply the best we have ever had.
