“If you find a better B&B tell me where…”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

I have stayed in a lot of B&Bs in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia, but Auberge J A Moisan is in an extraordinary class by itself. I’ll try not to repeat what many of the other reviews have already said. Francophones use the word convivial much more often than anglophones, although it is the same word and has the same meaning in both languages when applied to a person:. That is, cheerful, friendly, sociable, and good company. I can’t think of a better word to describe the proprietor, Clément. He was all of these things and more. We flew into Montreal and drove to Quebec City arriving near 9:30 PM. Although check-in is at 5:00 PM Clément went out of his way to welcome us at that late hour, despite the fact that he must get up very early in the morning to start breakfast.
Speaking of the breakfast….that was a wonderful daily event, with Clément explaining the courses and how they complemented each other. Every day a different smoothie, then a starter followed by a masterpiece of a main course. Extraordinary!
The auberge is beautiful with just the right touches. It is perfectly situated on the lively rue St-Jean, 5 minutes by foot from the walled city, 20 mins by foot from the Montcalm district with its great restaurants, Battlefields National Park and Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and 20 mins by foot from the trendy and up-and-coming St-Roch district. The walled city is spectacular but many tourists never venture beyond it and miss out on the places where locals go for dining and strolling. I’d love to write a book entitled “What to Do in Quebec After You’ve visited the Walled City,” but until then, Clément will have all the answers.
Don’t miss this wonderful and special place to stay!

We stayed at the Auberge J.A. Moisan in June and were absolutely pampered at this wonderful bed and breakfast. Monsieur St. Laurent was so helpful (he even parked our car for us)! The property is beautiful and the rooms are comfortable and spotless. The breakfast was hands down, one of the best breakfasts we have ever eaten. Monsieur St. Laurent recommended restaurants, sites to see, and schooled us in some of the history of Quebec. The bed and breakfast is within walking distance of the Old Town. Quebec is beautiful and staying at the Auberge J.A. Moisan was the icing on the cake.

We are dedicated B&B travelers and have just found a new favorite. Charming and first class service. The breakfast is absolutely outstanding. Five days and each breakfast was unique (smoothie, entree and main course). Clement introduced each course with a lesson on the cooking, flavors and Quebecois ingregients. Clement is a perfect host with tips on sites to see, places to eat and history of Quebec. Location is easy walking distance to old Quebec and parks. Rooms are quite small but very clean and very quiet, excellent soundproffing. We stayed in a B&B in old Quebec but would definitely go back to the J.A. Moisan. The store under the B&B is very charming too.

Room Tip: Ask when you book about the room sizes. All are very quiet.

This was our second time staying with Clément, and we were pleased to see that the quality of this excellent B&B hadn't suffered in the four years since our last visit.  Clément is still kind, gregarious, knowledgeable and quick to help out. Natalie is still whipping up spectacular multi-course breakfasts. And the rooms are as lovely as ever. We're so glad we decided to come back.  It's the only place we'll stay in Quebec.  Book early--this B &B fills out fast.

My wife and I recently spent five nights at Auberge J.A. Moison, and we both enjoyed every aspect of it.

The multi-course breakfasts are outstanding - Nathalie is an expert cook, and Clement is the perfect presenting host. The home is beautiful and welcoming. The bedroom, while small (which Clement will advise you when making your reservation), was spotless, classy and well-appointed, with a comfortable bed and a room temperature that's always just right. The location is perfect, a short walk from tourist areas but on a vital street that serves the local populace, with plenty of quality restaurants. And you have the J.A. Moison gourmet grocery downstairs, also operated by Clement and Nathalie, any time you need a special snack.

The most important thing is that this is hospitality from people who cherish the notion. During breakfast, be sure to tell Clement what you're interested in seeing during your visit, and he will point you in the right direction -- he's part booster, part historian, and genuinely caring about your vacation experience.

Special detail: On our last morning, Clement told us what we were having for breakfast, asked if we'd ever had the main dish, and we said yes, on our first morning there. He immediately went into the kitchen, and came back to tell us that we would instead have grilled grapefruit with cranberries followed a breakfast souffle, which proved to be wonderful combination. What was originally scheduled would have been fine, but Clement and Nathalie wanted to make sure each breakfast was unique as well as pleasing.

How could anyone possibly be a more stellar host?

We changed specifically our itinerary to be able to stay at this place (an extra night in quebec city), but after having read all those great reviews on TA, we considered it as a must see/stay...

And it's really worth it, the auberge is situated close to the old town, has lot's of charm, being linked with an 'epicerie' and the host Clement gives you more than enough history and info about Quebec (and Canada).

The room is indeed a bit small and yes, there is some noise from the street, the stairs are narrow and you can't put lot's of luggage, but all this is made up with the charming atmosphere of the early days and not to forget the gourmet breakfast, a real treat, loved the smoothie !! On top we had this in the little 'solarium', which adds even more charm to it..

A covered parking spot for the car was included in the room price.

We would immediately go back to this place when visiting again Quebec city !! Be although sure to book in time, as it seems to get quite quickly fully booked ..

The host Clement was really great -- offering a lot of information on the city. Breakfasts were tremendous as well. The little sunroom table was our favourite! I agree with a previous reviewer about room size -- some may be a little disappointed with that aspect. There are some steep stairs to negotiate as well. One thing we noted -- the size of the rooms is not really appreciably different. You could ask for a lesser cost one without sacrificing much, actually.

The location is tremendous, and we were very comfortable there. Pretty handy having the gourmet food store downstairs!
