“Good Value for Families but Room a Bit Dated”
Reviewed August 22, 2013 via mobile

We booked a family suite for our family of four. Good sized room including a sitting area with small refrigerator and new large screen TV. The entire hotel was very clean and the staff very friendly. Great location in the heart of the city -- on a quiet street only a few blocks away from all the action. My only complaints were that the room and its' furnishings were a bit dated. The bathroom was updated but the toilet ran every so often, the shower head didn't stay in position, and the shower water backed-up in the bathtub. These weren't major issues just minor annoyances. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for a nice place to stay at a good price.

It was my first time to Quebec, and this hotel was a perfect place to stay. The location could not have been better. While it was right in the heart of Old Quebec, is was on a quiet street so noise wasn't an issue. The room was clean, well appointed, and while it would have been a bit on the small side for two people there was plenty of space for just one. The staff was extremely helpful with tips on what to do in the area, where to eat, etc. The dining area gets a little crowded at breakfast time (breakfast is included with the rate) but that wasn't a problem. Breakfast is self serve with a great selection of breads, cereal, yogurt, bagels, fruit, juices and coffee. I would definitely stay there again.

Room was very comfortable and well appointed. Great location and the staff was wonderful especially in providing two bicycles free of charge for 2 hours to explore the city. The coffee maker in the lobby was fantastic with one push of the button: milk was steamed, coffee beans grinded and seconds later we're enjoying a great cafe latte.

The hotel was clean and the services friendly. The location was perfect as it is located in the old center and it was easy to get to the most interesting parts. At the hotel they provided a very good breakfast, Good coffee was available throughout the day.

The hotel is centrally located in the upper part of old Québec (get a cab to get up there with your suitcase), and you are within walking distance of everything.
Our room was large (2 queen beds) with a living area ; in comparaison the bathroom was significantly small. View onto the Frontenac castle, no street noise.
Free and efficient wifi.
The free tea/coffee machine available all day at the ground floor is a nice idea.

Now the weak point : breakfast ! the small room is often crowded, your only choice for eggs is to have them cold (hard-boiled), the only choice of meat in pork pate, bread and bagel seem of the supermarket type just coming out of the plastic pouch. Improvement here would make the Champlain close to excellent.

The hotel has done a makeover to try and make it nice, but it is a solid 3 star instead of the 3.5 I saw on some sites. Good breakfast, slow Internet and great coffee machine. Also the hotel staff was very friendly.

My friend and I stayed at Hotel Champlain for one night this past weekend. We were very pleased with our experience, with only a couple of constructive suggestions: softer, bigger towels, and better quality blankets would go a long way. For around $250/night (and yes, I recognize it's the height of high season smack dab in the middle of a tourist area), this would have really made the room perfect. However, I must say that the sheets on the bed and the pillowcases were extremely soft and smooth, and the bed itself was heavenly.

On to the good things, of which there were many: our check-in was seamless, and we were even able to get into our room earlier than anticipated. The parking was a breeze (we paid about $17 for a spot for our whole stay), and the hotel is very nicely appointed in the public areas. A slow elevator encouraged us to just use the stairs up to the 1st floor, where we found our lovely room. Slightly mad decor (vertical stripes on the walls, horizontal stripes on the curtains, and a different pattern on the carpet) somehow works, and the room was head and shoulders above most hotel rooms I've stayed in. It felt much warmer and more personalized than the standard paintings-nailed-to-the-walls style most hotels seem to have adopted.

The bathroom had a funky sink (glass bowl, crazy modern tap) and was extremely clean. Overall, it felt much more like a boutique hotel than I expected, which was a nice surprise. No trouble with plumbing (had a great therapeutic bath after a 6 hour walking day). Free wi-fi, nice flat screen TV and DVD player, and a mini fridge - what more can you ask for? It's also about 3 minutes from rue du Tresor and a huge selection of great restaurants, and about 5 from the famous (or infamous, depending on your level of fitness) stairs down the hill.

The breakfast was fantastic. It's served from 7-11, and we really appreciated being able to eat a bit later in the morning. Along with delicious coffee and cereal, there was a breakfast buffet consisting of bagels & toast, many kinds of jam, marmalade, caramel spread, chocolate spread and butter, folded crepes, hard-boiled eggs, and some kind of glazed donuts. I believe there was yoghurt available as well, and we may have missed something as we arrived at about 10:40. It was truly a great selection, and you could easily fuel up if you didn't want to spend a lot of money on lunch out. The highlight of the hotel's public areas for me, however, was their lovely 24/7 espresso machine in the lounge. It makes espresso, capuccino, cafe au lait, hot chocolate ... all fresh, not instant. It was like having an on-demand Italian cafe for free.

All-in-all we really enjoyed the hotel and I would certainly go back again - preferably not in high season, when the rooms are a slightly more affordable rate. This isn't a reflection on the Hotel Champlain, however, as all nearby hotels were the same if not astronomically more expensive, and I suspect not nearly as nice.

Lastly, the hotel recommends a restaurant nearby called Pain Beni, where we had a spectacular dinner for a very, very reasonable price (you also get 10% off with a little card from the hotel). I'll save the review for the restaurant's listing, but suffice it to say we were extremely pleased with the suggestion.

Room Tip: Ask about views if that matters to you; we were on the front of the hotel, on the 1st floor (not the...
