Reviewed July 24, 2013

My husband and I recently spent three nights at the Auberge Place d'Armes. We were greeted by a very friendly staff and given a complimentary upgrade to a lovely large room overlooking the street (Room 1). Everything in the room was wonderful, including the comfortable bed, 3 huge windows, pleasant temperature, storage space galore, roomy bathroom and coffee maker. Our only quibble - the overall lighting in the room was a bit dim (only after dark, as there was plenty of light streaming in during the day). The location was superb in terms of access to everything and proximity to a taxi stand and the funicular to the lower town. However, it is a VERY touristy spot and there are streams of people walking by at all hours. The windows were quite soundproof so this did not disturb us. Ultimately we preferred to walk around the Lower Town and areas outside the old city walls. But this would not deter us from staying at this lovely hotel on our next visit.
We ate our first dinner at Le Pain Beni which was exceptional, and enjoyed our breakfasts there as well. The staff is all uniformly friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We loved Room 1 which is only up a short flight of stairs and looks out onto the street.

Bonjour MusicgalNewYork
The entire team of the Auberge Place d’Armes would like to thank you for your wonderful review. Your comments are a source of motivation for us.
With his unique location it is so easy, as you mentioned it, to walk all over the city and discover all the charms of Quebec. The hotel has a lot of character since it is 2 old buildings joined together. In our rénovations we did our best to save the old walls , while adding modern amenities to provide you an unique stay and each room is unique in size and décor. As for your only quibble I will try to find a light that will give supreme confort in the room.
I will pass on your kind words to our chef and his crew at the Pain Béni. We are the only small hotel in town with a quality restaurant and this allows us to offer morning, noon and evening meals of quality. Glad you enjoyed it and hope to see you again !

My wife and I spend five nights in this very comfortable and charming hotel in the heart of the action of Quebec city. We had one of the suites, room deux (2) on the first floor, overlooking the Place D'Armes park and in sight of the Chateau Frontenac. The staff are very friendly and the room was spotlessly clean. We were there during the heat wave, so the air conditioned room was much appreciated.
There is no better area in the old city to stay in as far as we are concerned, especially if you are not dealing with a car. We arrived by cab from the airport and walked everywhere, and coming back to the room was always great because that is where there are nearly non-stop street entertainers. There were several very good performers. We really enjoyed Claude Berger. ( you can check out claude.berger.com)

Bonjour James K
Thank your for taking time to give us a feedback.
With his unique location it is so easy, as you mentioned it, to walk all over the city and discover all the charms of Quebec. The hotel has a lot of character since it is 2 old buildings joined together. The Marie-Antoinette suite is very very unique! In fact it is the only room in North America that have original panels from the Palace of Versailles. Those gilted panels where in the Marie-Antoinette exhibit in the wax museum and where shipped in Canada in 1922 for the opening of the Musée de Cire ( a branch of the famous Musée Grévin in France) . In our renovations we have them restored and put them back after buying and restoring period furniture to complete the décor, Even the ornements on the 3 drawer chest come from France.
A room with character indeed!
Thanks again and au plaisir donc de vous vous accueillir à l’Auberge Place d’Armes lors de votre prochain séjour.

My nineteen year old daughter and myself were very impressed with our two night stay here in mid-July 2013. Our room was spotless and very well appointed. The brick interior of the room and antique like furniture created a quaint and wonderful atmosphere. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The Murphy bed was very comfortable. We both thought the bathroom and especially the shower were excellent. The desk clerks were friendly and very helpful. We ate two breakfasts and one dinner at their in-house restaurant and were impressed with their food and ambience. The wait staff was both professional and friendly. Everyone made us feel welcomed. Location was in the center of everything. We highly recommend this small and quaint hotel.

Merci for taking your time to write us a review, we appreciate it. We are proud of our team since they make the différence. They know their city and want to share it with you
My son and I are personally touched by your review since Auberge Place d’Armes is family owned and that the décor was created by us…. The hotel has a lot of character and in our rénovations we did our best to save the old walls , while adding modern amenities to provide you an unique stay and each room is unique in size and décor.
We are very proud of our restaurant, the Pain Beni as you can start the day with a good cooked to order breakfast and enjoy a nice dinner indoor or outdoor on the patio.
Have a great day et au plaisir de vous revoir

Just enjoyed 2 days in magical Quebec City! This wasnt our first time at Auberge Place D'Armes and it wont be our last. The location on Ste-Anne is much too be desired with it being in the heart of Old Qebec. We found the room (number 8) to be a little smaller than what we usually book but we were lucky to get a room with such little notice. The breakfast at the restaurant next door was full breakfast with various options, surely to satisfy most palets!.The staff are sensitive towards their clients and will do what they have to do to ensure their clients are satisfied. There was a small hickup but the hotel was very quick to respond and ensure our satisfaction - that is what will bring us back.

Room Tip: There is a room in particular with a brick wall that we stayed in last time and it was fantastic and...

This hotel cost $270 a night in high season. It isn't worth it.

The hotel is located on a passenger only street, so you can't park in front to drop off your luggage. The hotel does not have an elevator; we had to walk up two flights of stairs, and there are two more flights for those unlucky enough to be put on a higher floor. The room was small; we had no room for anything. The bathroom was small as well. The room was poorly lit; we could not read. There is no lobby or sitting room.

The staff was friendly and courteous.

Bonjour Arple,
We take great care to read all comments regarding our hotel, since it is a good place for us to learn about our weaknesses and to correct them.
I am truly sorry your stay at Auberge Place d’Armes did not meet your expectations. First, I would like to thank you for the nice comment about our staff. I would like to point out a few things regarding your comments. Since we are located at the corner of 2 pedestrian street and that the unloading zone is about 50 feet from the entrance, we offer complete valet service to take care of your car and your bags that we carry all the way to your room. It is a so small disadvantage for our so incredible location.
The restaurant is on ground floor and there are three floors with rooms above. You where on the second floor and there is only one more floor for the attic rooms! As stated in the information book in your room we do have a small reading room with a computer, a fireplace and books available for you. We are an urban inn, in two historical buildings joined together and no two rooms are alike. For that reason, we encourage people to contact us when booking to choose a lower floor room or a larger one or one with a better view or a special décor or…. We believe that you occupied room 21 that has a sitting/reading area with a nice Costanza fixture and a lot of different type of lights and fixtures displayed throughout the room, but if you had told us your need for an additional light our devoted staff would have resolved the problem quickly.
I sincerely thank you for your comments. It allows us to communicate and improve on our services.
Regards
Michelle and Marc-Antoine Doré

The hotel was a little difficult to find because our GPS did not recognize the street name, but it was worth searching for. Our room was beautiful and we were delighted to find a jetted tub. The staff was extremely helpful and gracious. Parking is limited, so we recommend using the valet service. You really don't need your car to see the city, but be prepared to walk up and down hills. Breakfast was included with our room and we were very happy to find that breakfast is in the adjacent restaurant and there was a full menu of delicious choices. The only caution I would give is that there is no elevator, so if you cannot handle stairs this would not be a good choice for you.

Room Tip: The deluxe room has a jetted tub that is wonderful!
