Auberge de la Paix
Reviewed November 15, 2012

Auberge de la Paix is basically in the heart of Old Quebec. I stayed one night...August 26, 2012. It was a neat hostel, I stayed in a room with 5 beds and a small storage space...I think on the 2nd floor. The staff was helpful with pointers on walking around Quebec. Other guests were very pleasant...always a plus when staying at a hostel. I broke bread a couple of times in the courtyard with guests and shared travel experiences. This was a "quick" trip and I would stay here again.

Auberge de la Paix is a ideal place to stay if you are in a budget.
The staffs are friendly.
We traveled in a group of four so we stayed in room 103 with 2 bunk beds.
There are 4 lockers and a sink in the room and everything is clean.
The space in the room is quite OK for 4 people.
However, there is no socket in the room. But there is two or three in the hall just outside the room.
The staff recommend people to charge their electronic products in their office.
There may be some people drinking beer and making noises at night(especially during weekends).

They provide free breakfast with toast, cereal, milk, coffee or some other drinks from the hot drinks machine(the drink from the machine is only for free during breakfast!)

The location is great!
Almost every attractions in the Old Town are within walking distance.

This auberg has everything going for it - clean, right in the middle of the tourist area, but in a very quiet street, good kitchen, dining areas, lounge area, good sized rooms, friendly staff, reasonable tariff.
However, the floors are timber, so if you have fellow guests coming home after midnight and they don't take off their shoes, boots, etc, you have a herd of elephants marching over your room until they settle down.
This did only happen to us one night, but none of the other reviews mentioned a noise problem, so thought I should throw it in there.

Nice and clean budget hostel right in the middle of the Old Quebec City. Difficult to find such a bargain so I fully recommend it.

Shared bathrooms were clean. Our room was a bit small, with no much space but with some furniture and decoration on the walls, making it more pleasant to stay in. It has the feel of a shared house/apartment.
Newly refurbished.
Basic breakfast is included with a fair choice of options.

Staff is very helpful. They gave us a lot of facilities - we didn't need to pay a deposit when to book the room, they were OK with keeping our luggage very early in the morning when other places didn't and ended up taking us in before the check-in time, they were up at 6am to check us out and prepare our breakfast that was supposed to start at 7am...

Just be aware that there is no elevator and the hostel is a 2 floor house. They hire linen but you also can use your own sleeping bag. They take a deposit that is refunded when you leave.

Came with a group of six people this fall and wanted to get our own room - bingo! Excellent value at $26 a night. The room had bunkbeds and was clean, totally fine. (FYI they are not big enough to stuff two people on, no matter how much you want to.) The shower on the second floor is WAY better, use that one. Bathrooms are a little small but pretty clean, so nothing to worry about. The location is AWESOME! You are literally around the corner from the main square in the city, easy walking distance to everything you'd want to see.
Breakfast is simple but for the price you're paying, who cares. You get cereal, toast, and coffee/tea. There's a really cute little garden out back where you can eat - there's a deli/grocer next to the hostel so we spent a few excellent hours out back with a bottle of wine and some cheese.
Bring your own towels and sheets, a lock for your locker in the room, and also some shower shoes.
I would definitely come back here! This is an expensive city, and while not really luxurious, this hostel has a great location and provides a nice, clean place to sleep.

I'm giving this four stars because it is decent affordable accommodation in what can be a very expensive city. It is a wholesome, family environment with an eclectic mix of guests (20 somethings, families, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, a group of developmentally challenged adults with their social workers). If you are travelling with a group or with 2 other people, you get a dorm room for yourselves and you can all stay together. If you are a solo traveller, you have to be put in a dorm room with 4 other people. The rooms are mixed, so there are men and women in the same room. This turned out to be good, as guys tend to be on their best behavior around women they may want to impress. It was not a party atmosphere; most people were in bed by 11 pm. Again, this was great for me; dorm rooms can be a nightmare for an adult, but everyone was well-behaved and respectful. The showers on the third (top) floor are not good; the flow of water is timed to shut off after 30 seconds and you have to keep pushing the button in to get the water started again. The shower on the second floor landing is much, much better; use that one regardless of which floor you are assigned. Breakfast is very basic: toast, jam, corn flakes and cheerios. There is a coffee machine that is a little difficult to figure out especially early in the morning. There is also milk and juice. Make sure to eat at Le Buffet de Antiquaire on St. Paul Street in the Antiques District. If you are going through August and early Sept, don't miss the free Cirque du Soleil show at 9 pm on Tuesday through Saturdays (get there no later than 8 pm to get in line). There is info on this on the bulletin board in the vestibule of the Auberge.

Room Tip: stay with a group and get a room to yourselves; try not to have one next to the showers
