Cafe Krieghoff
Ranked #56 of 120 Quebec City B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 12, 2008

I did not stay at the B&B - I just went for breakfast. My girlfriend and I had read nothing but great reviews of the breakfast at Cafe Krieghoff all over the net so we decided to try it. We waited at the door for 10 mins for a table even though there were plenty of clean ones ready. When we inquired a passing hostess about sitting, she told us to be patient and wait. We were finally lead to a table and proceeded with ordering. After watching two nearby tables get their food despite ordering after us, we listened to another lady cancel her additional order - 2 pcs of toast! - because it was taking forever and she just wanted to leave. Our meal finally arrived. My French Toast with Fresh Fruit was two cold undercooked pcs of french toast with an old fruit cup dumped on top. Worse, they dumped half a litre of the fruit juice on the toast too! We had to ask for the waiter through a busboy because the waiter never came by to check on us. She finally came, was rude when i explained how my breakfast was unedible and I ordered the same as my gf - eggs/bacon/toast, which at $8.00 was gross and the toast was cardboard baguette. 20 mins later, my GF was done hers and my re-order never arrived. We left some money on the table and started to head out. The waitress finally came to our table - no food still!!! Instead of apologizing she was rude so we just left. SLOW. BAD FOOD. OVERHYPED. DONT GO!

It was my first time in Quebec city and I wanted to stay somewhere close to Old Quebec. However, after countless days of searching the internet, all the prices I found for the "nicer" hotels seemed a little outrageous for a three day weekend. So we started looking into B&B's. Many of them were already booked but I stumbled upon the Cafe Krieghoff's website by chance and i'm so glad I did.

This is not a five star hotel obviously, but it did have all the necessities for a wonderful getaway in Quebec. The rooms are right above a quaint little cafe and are accessible by a pretty steep flight of stairs. The bartender/receptionist/waitress showed us to our room and she was very nice, quick, and efficient. The room itself was nothing spectacular but it was very clean and well maintained. The bed was large and the balcony outside provided the perfect setting for a nice cigar. Even with the cafe downstairs, we weren't bothered by ANY outside noise! The only problem with out rooms is that we could see into other people's windows staying at the B&B and vice versa so we kept our blinds closed the entire time for some privacy. However, we were hardly ever in the room anways so this wasn't a problem!

The breakfast they offerec was wonderful!! Their bowl's of cafe au lait are a definite must as are their crepes and homemade jam!! Everything was SO fresh and delicious! They do give you an eight dollar voucher but it is certainly enough for a scrumptious breakfast. With 16$ we got 2 coffees, 2 juices (unlimited), 2 crepes EACH, english cream or syrup, bacon and potatoes!!! The only thing that wasn't included was tip but they are so efficient and thorough it's well worth the 5 dollars! There is also a common room with free internet and a television (there are also t.v.'s in the room) The computer is almost always available and they provide umbrellas in case of rain..just a few touches that made it so nice ;-)

Another thing to consider is parking. Parking is not included in the price of the B&B but if you decide to pay for parking it is a public lot where you can come and go as you please...almost. We wanted to take the car out Saturday night but the parking attendant advised against it because the parking lot was filling up and they were closing soon. Even with the hotel pass we were not guaranteed a spot. But we just walked a little instead and then took a 5 dollar cab to Le Charbon (a definite must-try restaurant).

Cartier street, where the hotel is located, is adorable and you can find anything in the vicinity: restaurants, a little market with fresh quebec strawberries everyday!!, pharmacies and many little boutiques. The B&B is also ten minutes away by foot from old quebec and it's a lovely walk byt the Citadel and les Plaines D'Abrahams.

All in all it was a very lovely weekend and I would definitely recommend Cafe Krieghoff to someone looking for a no-frills place to stay with basic ammenities (also, the rooms are cleaned each morning which was a plus for me ;))

I just spent a perfectly lovely weekend in Quebec City and I have to say, one of the highlights was definitely staying at Cafe Krieghoff.

HIGHLIGHTS:
(1) Location, Location, Location - situated in the heart of the stylish Avenue Cartier where you can find a mix of reasonably priced restaurants and bars, groceries and specialty food shops, hair salons, pharmacy, clothing and jewelry boutiques, etc... It's only a 10-20 min walk to Old Quebec, Grand Theater, Grand-Allee and other major attractions.
(2) Beautiful rooms (I stayed at #5) - clean and spacious with great amenities (flat screen tv, hairdryer, full length mirror, tissues, air conditioner/heater)
(3) FREE Internet Access (1 computer in the common area)
(4) Complimentary breakfast (up to $8 Canadian) at Cafe Krieghoff - tres delicious!
(5) Convenience: Taxi stand at the end of Avenue Cartier (about 30 minute drive to the airport; cost is $30 Canadian).
(6) Value: (only $75-85 Canadian/night)

THINGS TO CONSIDER:
(1) The b&b is located up a flight of stairs next to the cafe.
(2) The keys to the b&b can stick a little.
(3) There isn't a staff hovering around you at the b&b since they all work in the cafe downstairs. I personally found this to be a positive thing because it allows you lots of privacy. Plus, any questions/assistance can be answered by the friendly wait staff at the cafe.

All in all, I would DEFINITELY stay at Cafe Krieghoff again.

From the minute we attempted to check in to the moment we left--a span of 24 hours--we were treated with rudeness and disdain. Language problem maybe? Nope. We both speak French. Also the supposed B&B breakfast included was a ruse: you got a voucher for a fixed amount to be used in the restaurant downstairs.

In oder to check in, you need to lug your bags through the restaurant, then once checked in, lug them back outside and up 2 staircases.

Using their online form, I indicated that we would be arriving early; around 9am. I received an email confirming my reservation.

On arriving at 9 am, we were told by a Pippi Longstocking waitress that this was not possible. Instead, she told us to walk around until 12pm or so. But even then, maybe we should phone in advance just to be sure the room would be vacated by then, which she gaily suggested, might be very likely. Also, they insisted on getting the payment for the night immediately, so we couldn't do as we should have and found someplace more inviting, such as a YMCA.

On returning 3 hours later, dog tired, it turns out the room was still not available. You'll have to wait.

When I told the manager that this was unacceptable, he told me, no, it was acceptable. Period. At 1:45pm, we were finally permitted to enter our charmless room.
Enough? No: at 9:30pm, a knock on our door, and another waitress, explaining that we had been put in the wrong room; we would have to move.

When I said no, she said she would check with her boss to see what to do. That was the end of that.

Morning of Departure, Pippi wait/actress pulls a face and in hands in a posture of prayer begs my forgiveness for everything. "It was all my fault."

Distance from owner? 3 feet.

Je m'en souviens! Worst US$110 I've ever spent.

What a fine place! The relaxed cafe downstairs gives this place buckets of charm and serves up the best brasserie style food in the area. And most importantly, they serve a great espresso. The rooms are clean and comfortable - as well as cheap - and it is located in a great street full of little cafes and bars, with the old city of Quebec just five minutes walk up the road.
There's also a common room with a well equipped kitchen if you want to prepare some grub, but the oven was bust when we stayed there. There's even a broadband-connected pc for checking your email and surfing illicit sites. Parking was a problem though - there's no free parking nearby, and I had to get up at 9 in the morning to feed the meter. Still, a great place that oozes charm - I totally recommend it!
