This hotel is well located within the city walls and an easy walk to many of the local attractions. Parking is a five minute walk in public parking, underground.

The hotel is small, small reception, small room where tea and coffee is available along with Internet. We were on fourth floor in a tiny bedroom. It was clean and well enough furnished but it is tiny not much space to unpack etc. The bathroom was well equipped and it did seem strange to have a fridge next to the toilet. Better than none I suppose, there was certainly no room in the bedroom for one. The bed was comfortable but only a double ( uk size). There is a lift but small so if there are more than two people with luggage wanting to use it, you may have a longish wait.

Breakfast is a buffet, quite basic but adequate. There are two cereals to choose from, fresh fruit, pastries and bread for toasting. Yoghurts are also available. Again the dining room is small and we did see a queue develop when some guests seem to take a very long time over breakfast.

Staff were generally friendly with one exception. Whilst in a popular location and in peak season it did seem quite expensive for what it is.

This hotel is in a perfect location in Quebec city, right next to the park and city wall, close to old town attractions, restaurants, and shops. The free breakfast is good and the lady there was very helpful. The parking garage is across from the hotel, with only 1 free exit every 24 hours for hotel guests.

We stayed in the 4th floor in the back, with a small window view. The room and the shower room were very small but clean. There was no A/C in our room and we had to open the window to get fresh cool air.

The front desk worker (probably the owner) was not friendly to me, but was OK to my husband. No free walking tours and other recommendations were mentioned to us during our 2-days stay. The hotel also mistakenly charged us for a cancellation which was made 10 days ahead of our arrival. We didn't found it out until 2 weeks later and had to request a refund through our online booking agent. I surely will not return to deal with the same hotel owner.

Room tip: The back rooms are quieter with city views. The rooms in the 4th floor may not have AC.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review.

There is indeed A/C in every one of our rooms, including on the fourth floor, where the air vents are located on the ceiling (above the bed in the case of this particular room).
We also have a limited number of parking cards with unlimited in/out priviledges, although those are given on a first come/first served basis.

We apologize if you felt that the receptionist (who is not the owner) was unfriendly, as our goal is always to provide the best service possible. As such, it is always a pleasure for us to recommend restaurants, attractions and tours when our guests ask us for such recommendations. There is also a display in the lobby containing dozens of flyers, including tours (free or paying), restaurants and museums.

We also do apologize for the confusion on our part regarding the cancellation of your first reservation and the erroneous charge. We take these matters very seriously and that is why we proceeded with the refund as soon as you brought the matter to our attention. By the time the booking agent contacted us, we had already proceeded with the refund, although it had not yet gone through.

We thank you again for your review and hope that you will reconsider staying with us again in the future.

Our family of 5 stayed in room 40 on the top floor (4th) for the second time in 3 years. Staff are friendly, helpful, multi-lingual and efficient. It's a clean and charming spot in old Quebec. This time our daughters were aged 13, 11 and 8.

We requested the same room again with 2 queen beds and asked for a cot for our youngest. This is a corner room with a view of gate into old Quebec from a dormer window. Ceilings are slanted at dormers and u will bang your head once or twice but still worth it for the quaint style. It was a little over $300/night.

This place is not the Frontenac but has much more character. After walking through the glorious yet impersonal lobby of the Frontenac I am always happy to return to the L'Esplande at the end of the day. Highly recommend.

To do in old Quebec:
Horse and carriage ride at dusk
Dine and dine out lots
Buskers at the Frontenac
Plains of Abraham
Walk, take in the European style streets
Shopping in boutiques, most r well priced; kids love the candy and gelato shops

I thought this place was great!

Our room was super tiny (I think one of the least expensive too), but that was just fine for two of us. It had everything we needed. We were only there a few days in August 2016. Yes, breakfast was included, and we didn't realize this ahead of time. Its not steak and eggs and bacon, but there's lots of coffee, fresh fruit salad, juice, pastries, cereals, toast, bagels, and a friendly lady working the tables and signing you in each morning. Amazing way to start your day before walking around the old city.

The location is also perfect. Close enough to everything you want to get to, and just down the road from the best new modern restaurants, and the Chateau Frontenac. Parking is a bit odd and $17/day extra. They give you a parking pass card thing and you park in a parking garage just across the road. Listen carefully to their directions & park on top floor in back corner -closest to hotel, and remember in order to enter the garage, place or wave their parking pass over the sticker/picture of the parking pass that is on the parking machine - this will make more sense when you try to get into the garage. Anyhow, check in by pulling right up directly in front of the hotel on the left side of d'Auteuil...free "check in for 15 minutes" parking spot right there. Unload everything, and park in the garage after you check in.

If you need to do some ironing, just ask for the cordless iron, and you'll find an ironing station on the first floor (there may be others too).

I think we had room # 8, which featured a nice view of a fire escape, and some concrete - again, you aren't staying here for the view...your legs bring you to the vies in this great spot!

They had free umbrellas too - yeah, it rained solid one day.

Free coffee to take with you on your morning stroll.

Room was really cold, and you couldn't change the temperature yourself, except by placing your suitcase over the cold air inlet - recommended!

I've stayed at Chateau Frontenac before for 3x the price...definitely not worth it after finding this gem!

Hope this helps!

Room tip: ...I don't think this building is tall enough to feature any great views...maybe the park across the street?

Good location , nice staff, buffet breakfast nice also BUT beware of the air conditioning as it never switches off and is very cold and noisy !
Also wifi very poor in room.
Asked the staff multiple times how to turn off the air-con but whatever they and me did it was on all the time and woke us up regularly very early morning, shame as otherwise good location and nice room (37)
Rooms at front have view over park and the old city wall where rooms at back have limited views of chateau fontenac but only if higher floor.
Tea or coffee making in room would be nice as fridge available.
Shame as otherwise this hotel is a good location to walk everywhere in old Quebec.
