“a real gem in quebec”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2011

We stayed at this hotel Aug. 28 and 29 and it was the perfect place to end our week long trip to Canada. The hotel is beautifully decorated, the staff is extremely pleasant and helpful, especially in making recommendations of things to do and places to eat. Our room was impecably clean and quiet and we especially enjoyed the outdoor spa. The hotels location is perfect for both walking to attractions, and accessing public transportation to lower town destinations. Our whole family agreed Chateau laurier was by far our favorite hotel in our favorite Canadian city!

We just came back yesterday from Quebec City.
The whole trip was very memorable.
After reading some of the negative reviews on this site we were a little weary about
going to this hotel. But to our surprise, it was everything we wanted, and then some. A nice bedroom (decent size), very comfy king size bed. Our window was facing the courtyard so it was very quiet at night. Fair size bathroom. Altogether, we were very pleased with the room. (317)

The staff was very prompt for getting us what we needed. The best example for that would be the tickets we got through the concierge to go to the Lotto-Quebec Fireworks competition at the Montmorency falls .Very good deal, considering we got the shuttle bus to the waterfalls ( Francois, our bus driver was very funny and courteous. He made the ride quite interesting with history facts and many jokes. Thank you Francois). I have to suggest going in August and seeing that fireworks competition...it was breathtaking. Especially the first 15 minute multimedia show projected right on the falls..it was awesome.

Back to the hotel, it was very clean, staff were very polite and helpful, lots of services as you have read before(gym, pool, hot tub, convenience store). You could walk right out of the hotel and grab a ride with a nice horse and carriage.

The only downside with the hotel is the St-Hubert... Although they did their best to serve people on time...they were very slow, especially when it took them 10 minutes to come back only for a pitcher of beer...(wouldnt this be the quickest order possible? lol).
The other time at St-Hubert, I had to wait 20 minutes for a wrap, only to find out that there were no more wraps..... so they offered me a different wrap (I had to pay the difference in price?????) where I come from.... that meal wouldve been free at that point.... But as someone else has stated, there are so many excellent restaurants on La Grande Allee that you dont want to spend time wasted at St-Hubert.

But that was the only downside to our whole trip and it wasnt enough to ruin the day. Everything else about the trip was awesome. Conveniently, at the same time of our visit, it was the New-France festival. So we definately learnt alot about Quebec's history. The people were all dressed up in old fashionned clothes and talked as they did during the colonisation, which made it a terrific experience.

Old Quebec was even better than I ever would have imagined. We walked half the day on Friday (went to see the Citadelle and walked to whole Governor's Promenade which leads to Chateau Frontenac....Amazing.!!! Then Saturday we walked through what I'd like to believe was the rest of Old Quebec(although we probably didnt even touch half of it). Then we went on to the Capital's observatory.. The tallest building in Quebec towering @ 31 stories tall....It was breathtaking as well. We could see everything... from Old Quebec, new Quebec, Levys, L'ile d'Orleans.

All this to say that if you think of planning a trip somewhere, I strongly recommend visiting Quebec City. And while you're there, might as well stay at Hotel Chateau Laurier, it is conveniently located for you to experience everything. All within reach, whether you are walking or taking the Ecobus, or horse and carriage.

One a different and final note... if you are a sushi afficionado.....there is this small sushi restaurant on rue St-Louis called Sushi Mizu....definately recommend it whether you want a snack or a meal... The chef makes it right in front of you and its probanly the best sushi i've had.

Sorry if this review was long but thats pretty much all I had to say about my experience in Quebec. BEST place I've been in Canada. Didnt want to leave anything out. The fact that we got back yesterday means that everything is still very fresh in my head and I want to make sure that my review will make you WANT to visit this place.
Hope it helped

Marc

Room Tip: Try to book room 317. Very large and quiet at night. Good sleep. Good view of courtyard

We were generally impressed with the hotel. The communal areas- reception, pool, hot tubs etc were great. Convenient little shop in the building and excellent laundry service. You might struggle to find some things though- the hotel layout is very complicated!
Our room was very small when compared with other rooms we've paid far less for. I guess you pay for the splendid location so close to old Quebec and its many attractions. We were on the Grande-Allee side of the hotel and it was noisy, from the road and people. It was not enough to stop us sleeping though!! We were there Tues - Thurs and the noise did get louder towards the weekend! The upside though was that the bars and restaurants were on our doorstep and we could take advantage!
The staff were professional, courteous and helpful at all times. A thoroughly nice place in a lovely location.

We have stayed at this hotel 4 times.
We spend a few days in Quebec City every summer to enjoy the music festival.
The last two times, we took advantage of the hotel's "music festival package" which includes breakfast and entry bracelets to the concerts.
The hotel location is great. Never use the car once we arrive.Everything is within walking distance.

Have tried to use the outdoor hot tubs on every visit, but they've always been occupied. If you want the jacuzzi, take a room that has one.

I do recommend you ask for a room in the newer section. The rooms in the older section are cheaper but dated.
We've had one free upgrade in our 4 visits.
The newer rooms are modern. Beds are very comfy.

Service is hit and miss. We've been treated great during some visits and less so on others. We usually arrive around noon. The other times, it was not an issue, may have waited a little while for a room which is normal and not a big deal, but they had a hard time getting us one by 4pm this time. If you're going to the music festival, book early! It fills up fast. We reserved in May.

It's a nice hotel, great location, but we don't feel special in any way when we stay here. If you're expecting that personal touch feeling, this won't work for you.

Valet parking is the way to go here. The valets are very good.

We will probably stay here again due to it's location, cleanliness, and packages.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the renovated section.

Staff is lovely, esp valet who took a shine to our 8 year old, but room is barely acceptable for $189/night. Room is clean but stuffy, small, old style with stains on carpet, most remote room in hotel, overlooking garbage receptacles. More expensive because here during Nouvelle France festival but hotel is huge and more professional reception would have upgraded if possible. Location is perfect for us but would not stay here again due to room.

I stayed here for a week-long conference, at the recommendation of a friend who lives in Quebec City (and it was also $100 per night less expensive than the conference hotels). It turned out to be a great recommendation; the hotel's location is excellent, facing Parc de la Francophonie and along Grande Allee. There are tons of great restaurants within a 10-minute walk (and the hotel's rotisserie restaurant is decent, but not exciting). The free wireless Internet service was a bonus, but as expected with 100+ Internet geeks at once, it was very slow. After most of the conference attendees had left it was much better.

The breakfast buffet is the same every day, so if you are there for a week it gets a bit boring, but the quality was good and the price was reasonable for a hotel breakfast. If we come to Quebec City again, we'll stay here for sure.

Room Tip: "Economy" rooms are very European; this means small. Make sure you know what you want!

Very good location, about ten minute walk from the Old City sights and right next to restaurants. Room was OK, no fridge which was disappointing given the price of the room. They offered to bring one at $35/day. However checking with other ppl staying in better and more expensive hotels, it seems that fridge is not standard Quebec equipment.
Internet connection was terrible, big packet loss, couldn't use Skype for phone calls.
