You can almost feel the history there. Surrounded by shops and museums, but still retains the look of the old city square.

Okay, I know it is a tourist trap, but I loved it. The look is very European and it is so quaint. For the most part, though, it is just shopping and eating.

This review is about the must-do museum for families with kids. The entrance is through a little gift shop which is best marked by a sign for "Centre d'interprétation de Place-Royale", not the museum.

My family (wife, 5yo son, and 2yo daughter) were pretty much wandering around Place Royale and the surrounding areas when we decided to try the Place Royale Museum (Musée de la place Royale). We are very glad we did.

First, the place was very inexpensive. The kids were free. The adults were $10, I think.

The museum featured a neat little 3D movie about the founding of Quebec and controversy around Champlain's role in its founding. It was about 30 minutes long, in English, so the kids could actually make it through without too much fuss.

Upstairs there were neat little exhibits about commerce in Old Quebec. In one part, there were activities like trying to figure out how many fur pelts you'd need to buy something (e.g., tools or guns). There was also a board game about trying to get your ship to Quebec.

The exhibits themselves were very informative with lots of historical information.

Downstairs was an amazing "dress-up" activity with costumes for the kids and parents and a whole Old Quebec house complete with pretend kitchen, bed, fireplace, work bench, etc. The entire area was built into the original basement of the building giving it a very authentic feeling. That said, it was cleaned up nicely with nice wood floors and nice lighting. I'm pretty sure that the kids would have played here all day.

This museum is quite a little treasure. The really sad thing is that I'm not sure how many people knew about it. We essentially had the whole museum to ourselves save for the occasional other person we ran into (maybe a total of 4 people over the course of more than an hour).

Go there and take in the history. Imagine it with just you standing there (a little hard to imagine during the busy tourist season). My husband had a picture of this spot on his computer before our trip...he was pretty psyched to see it in person.

A real treasure, and loved the mural on the building just to the side of the plaza. Very well situated near the waterfront
