Enjoyed a great coffee at La Maison Smith while looking at all the great houses in Place Royale. We used to live in Germany and this is the closest you will find to Europe in North America!

While researching our trip to Quebec City, I came across a photo of the plaza at Place Royale. It was so charming and quintessential old Quebec that I had to see it in person. And it certainly didn't disappoint. The combination of the old cobblestones with the church and surrounding stone buildings was picture perfect, and what I would image an old French town square would looked like a few hundred years ago. If you have the chance, make sure to go (or go back) to see it when it's lit up at night (as well as the rest of Quebec City). We were assured by our vacation rental host that it's perfectly safe to wonder around the city at night. We felt perfectly safe even in the dimly lit streets. Obviously, all the stores were closed, but it actually made for better window shopping and the lighting was better for photos of window displays.

The museum on the Place Royale is small and only takes about 45 minutes to view all 3 levels. If you have more time it is worth exploring the lower level with the period costumes available for tourists to use and take photos... and children's sizes too. The 3-D movie about Samuel de Champlain was interesting but not spectacular... probably not appealing for youth. We also took the tour (included in the ticket price) of the Place Royale and down the street to the batterie with a guide dressed in period costume. It was the best part of the experience.

This plaza looks like the little village where belle lives in beauty and the beast. So picturesque. There are several restaurants and a beautiful church. I would highly recommend sitting in one of the outdoor restaurants and taking in the view.
