Description: Opened in november 2009, the Simple Snack Sympathique, at 71, rue Saint-Paul, a few minutes walking distance from Toast! its older brother! SSS offers you 2 ambiances. Enter through the lounge section, with its high tables and chairs and the music a beat higher. The restaurant section offers another decor and more cosy atmosphere with its working fireplace where time is of no importance to savour a great meal.

“Excellent food- but no take-away containers?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

We enjoyed an excellent dinner at SSS one evening after a very long day out. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, though. When we asked about packing up our (mostly uneaten) dinners, the waiter was a little confused. They don't have any containers to pack up left overs. After a bit of research, he was able to locate two plastic containers, but wanted to charge for them. Fine, the food was worth paying a little extra to be able to take it with us. In the end, we weren't charged anything extra, but it was a weird interaction that detracted from an otherwise excellent experience- food and ambiance wise.

“Excellent food with easy ambiance”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 31, 2013 via mobile

We ate lunch here and returned for dinner as SSS gives a foodie everything you could want with a particularly welcoming, casual, without being loud, atmosphere. The food is superb - creative with something for everyone. We had the crab cake at lunch - crab with some wonderful flavors barely held together so you could truly enjoy the 1/4 lb of crab! We had two dinner specials - a beef pot au feu and a crispy duck leg. Both were mouth watering. The side dishes were fascinating melange of flavors and textures.

“Exceptional”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

My husband and I are self-admitted foodies and rather particular so it was a delight to discover this lovely little bistro off the beaten path. The service was average, the decor was eclectic and the food outstanding. The salmon tartar was so fantastic that we had to head back a second time to have it again. The wine list was extensive with excellent options for pairing the perfect wines and dishes. it seemed to be a favourite of locals with a hip vibe, subdued lighting and intimate seating areas. Really a terrific place.

“Unpretentious and Delightful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

SSS is the little sister of the more famous Toast Restaurant, but it definitely shouldn't be overlooked. We enjoyed our first dinner here in September so much that we went back for another.

The food follows the bistro-menu style, but with lots of originality. The fried-oyster appetizer (served fish-and-chips style in a little paper cornucopia) was the best I'd ever had (and I lived for years in Maryland, oyster capital of the US!). And the crab cake was one of the best. The little lemon-basil ice cream sandwich was a refreshing and surprisingly light (and very tasty!) dessert.

Service was generally well-paced from a charming wait staff. And the price is very fair, very moderate for extremely nice food.

One of the nights we were there, the restaurant was filled with what seemed to be local, French-speaking people. Which is a good testament to this resto's quality in a city renowned for its food.

“High hopes but . . .”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013

Food descriptions gave us hope but the reality was a disappointment. The restaurant even forgot ingredients in some dishes! We had the duck wings, the jalapeño sticks, poutine and the roasted red pepper spread (apparently without bacon!) service was good but harried and the wine list did not complement the food. The food was extremely slow to arrive-which is confusing since we ordered strictly appetizers, which is what we were told was the way to go here.
