Essentially the heart of old Quebec. Restaurants, shops, etc. this is where you visit when in Quebec. You can walk for a few hours here, people watch, eat, etc.

We stayed in upper town when the music festival was on so it was very busy all weekend, the atmosphere was great enjoyed the street performers and the fantastic weather. Felt very safe and everyone very friendly we never had any problem with people speaking English to us although we had been worried before we arrived that we may encounter problems.

Our family has been to Europe several times, but this has been our first trip to QC. The old city is a step back in time, and it you're ready to walk, full of history at every turn. Best advise? Stay in the old city at one of the many geT hotels ( or rent an apartment on Rue Couillard from VRBO!) and walk to all the sites, restaurants, pubs and shops.

Lots of walking up hill but great exercise and get to look at historic buildings at the same time. Kids will enjoy the walk and sites.

Be sure to read signage posted on buildings as many are historical sites such as Rene Levesque's family home near the Citadel - remember you will walk down hill to the waterfront and fully uphill to the top near the Citadel and Parlament buildings. Take a walk on the Promenades near the Frontenec, and if you wonder what that slide is at the end . . . it's for winter / ice sledding .... yes, we had to ask ! Great views from all around and we took two tours, one to Isle d'Orleans which went very fast - and the other was for the Discovery Center - don't miss the lil' bus tour with Abraham Martin ---- oh so fun !! It is an easy way to get around the upper part of upper town and hear some tales about the English/French battle on the Plains d'Abraham. The Discovery Center has a little video where you go into three different rooms....do it You will enjoy, and it is good for children as well (ages 5 and up).
