Unfortunately the weather was not on our side this visit, so we did not get to walk as much as we had planned. We took the funicular up to the Upper Town and spent a few hours wandering around. It was very interesting and unique. I am sure we missed a lot of things, but will definately go back. It was recommended that we park at the bottom of the hill and walk up because it is easier to walk down the hill when you are tired. It is a recommendation worth taking. We parked close to the ferry terminal which is just across the road from the town. Parking was $10 for 12 hours which is well worth it. If you are taking a vehicle into the Upper Town be aware that the streets are very narrow and there are many one way streets.

It does not take long to picture yourself in France once you are in the heart of Upper Town. The historic Chateau Frontenac, the Citadel, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Holy Trinity Anglican Church and quaint shops and restaurants make this a special place.

I hadn't expected such a delightful, well-maintained old city. It is very efficient to walk everywhere, as even the hills are short. Hundreds of dining options, lots of intriguing shops. This should definitely be on your bucket list.

It doen't matter where you explore while in Old Quebec, you will find it visually stimulating and historically rich. The Upper Town with the magnificent Chateau Frontenac is the part of Quebec most often seen in images. The view from the terrace is world class.

While in Old Quebec we stayed in upper town and enjoyed all the the beautiful architecture and history. The Fort and city walls surround the upper city and stone gates allow entry into this area from the rest of Quebec City. We found upper town to be more accessible and less crowded than lower town. Also there seemed to be more nightlife.

We stayed at Maison Du Fort which was directly next to the fort and were glad we did for it's proximity to all things in upper town. Upper town has more restaurants imo and a better variety of shops and bars than lower town. The only reason I did't give it 5 stars was the traffic issues. It wasn't just the fact that there was heavy traffic at times but we were surprised to see cars racing up the roads at all times of the night. That being said the rest of the area and it's experiences are top notch! Similar to lower town upper town it has live entertainment in the surroundings businesses as well as street performers. The variety of restaurants and shops was a pleasant surprise. We saw locals visiting some of the shops selling artwork/hand crafted goods and eating in the restaurants in upper town which made the area seem more authentic.

If you are in upper town do visit the fort as well as the Terasse Duffrin to get the full scope of the city. And of course if you have time do a horse and carriage tour and stop in the Chateau Frontenac for brunch which was phenomenal (see review).
