While Québec overall struck us as very touristic, rue St joseph and Le Cercle gave us a really cool experience of the city and its people. Le Cercle had fantastic food, very creative and great quality, and the best wine choice we have encoutnered so far.

On our roundtrip through ontario&quebec we visited the beautiful(but very touristic)old town of quebec city. We stayed in the tryp hotel downtown which is a superb hotel.
It was still a long walk to the old town so we decided to look for a restaurant in the neighbourhood of the hotel and so we explored le cercle, a place for the locals with a half open patio,
It was definitely a good choice, a trendy place with nice people and fantastic food.
We had ordered the artichauts & les moules escabeche , la tartare and le cabillaud.
Al together with some nice wine the best diner we had during our holiday.
We decided our second night to come back and they didn't disappoint us, it was even so good.

the food and presentations were great. creative and fun. the cocktail list was a little too fruity for us and the wine selections were a little limited. but, this place was a great break from the normal tourist fare. i would go back for sure.

We discovered this place to eat on our last night having had rather hit and miss restaurant experiences up til then.
A complete change from a lot of the other places aimed at tourists - this seemed to have a clientele made up of locals!
This was far and away the best meal we had during our time in Quebec City and the service and ambience of the place was great.
Wonderful food using fresh local produce and excellent value for money too!

Le Cercle is located in St. Roch, and is walkable from the old city, but it's not a very attractive walk, and the streets are pretty busy. Because of this, we decided to head here directly after driving up from the US since we planned on parking our car for the rest of the trip. Originally we were going to a restaurant on the same street, but they were closed. Having done my homework ahead of time, this was also on my list. My daughter, who is an expert on salmon tartare, said her dish was pretty average, while my wife and I were happy with a fresh fish special and the spaghetti squash cannelloni. I would say the main courses were 'good' and the pistachio pastry dessert was 'excellent'. It was actually better than the dessert we had at a higher end restaurant (Chez Boulay Bistro). The cocoa nibs churros were a little boring though. The server was very friendly, and didn't have any problem speaking to us in English. He even offered us a taste of a couple of the house wines so we could make up our minds. All in all we had a good meal here.
