We took the Grand Tour with Neal as guide. He is American who has lived in Quebec City for several years, and he has degrees in French/early American French history, and he told us the he lives his dream job everyday. His enthusiasm was very evident, and that made his stories of the founding of Quebec and subsequent history come to life.
There was also an intern guide on our tour, and we learned that guides go through a year of intense coursework, then intern, then hope to get hired, so these guides are very well educated on the topics that they cover, making it worth the ticket price, in my opinion.
The tour lasted about 2.5 hrs, began in the Upper Town and worked its way down to Lower Town. The pace is moderately brisk, which I appreciate, so I would not recommend the tour for people with mobility issues. You should wear sturdy shoes as you will traverse some steep hills and cobblestones.
The history lessons really stuck with us for the rest of our time in Quebec. That is the ultimate indicator of a good tour!
An additional note. Some people provided a gratuity at the tour conclusion.
