“Off the tourist trail, into local neighborhood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012 via mobile

Walking distance from our hotel this was a nice change from the busy tourist areas. The hosts are gracious, often stopping by our table to chat and the food is very good except for the pickled acha which was just bad tasting oil. We will eat here again whenever we visit Montreal. It was the best Indian food I've had.

“Excellent”

We enjoyed the food. The atmosphere was really nice. It was a little bit old but the food was authentic. The staff was really nice. Even the cook came to ask us for our opinion.

“Hidden Treasure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012 via mobile

If you do not pay attention you will miss this treasure. There is no real signage identifying it and this little joint is located outside of the touristic areas. We were lucky to walk by and take a glimpse inside. For some reason we were attracted by its rustic charm and decided to venture in for dinner. Good thing we did otherwise we would have missed an authentic and delicious indian meal.
I was a bit put off by their formula type menu at first but it actually works pretty well, just play along with it. The most incredible part is that because the restaurant caters to student mostly, the prices are incredibly low by any standards.
This is a family business so some aspects are a bit amateurish (menus not updated or written over etc....) but the food makes it up to you ten times.
I would challenge them to refocus their wine list on pairings that complement the spiciness of the cuisine, re-implement the half bottle formats they one had, come up with some garden to glass cocktails using herbs and indian spices...

Love the menu, many options, food is authentic, not too spicy, owners run the restaurant and are extremely warm, and helpful when making suggestions. Love the Spinach Lamb, phenomenal dish!!

“Some of the best Indian food south of Jean-Talon.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2010

This mom and pop has been around for a few years now, and is my go-to place downtown for Indian food. Despite raising their prices over the past few years (to help pay for renovations and such, no doubt), it is still extremely reasonable, and as the title suggests, some of the tastiest Indian food south of Jean-Talon. The veg thali will set you back closer to $10, unlike the $6 plates of wonderfulness at Pushap, but given the location, I believe is totally worth it.

I haven't tried much aside from the thalis, but honestly, I'm totally satisfied with both the meat and veg thalis that I rarely ever think of order anything else aside from a soup or extra order of pakoras.

Service is quick and attentive and friendly. It's not the sleekest or cleanest joint in the world, but that's the price you pay for affordable delicious Indian food, and that's a price I'm totally willing to pay.
