“Not worth the Hipe!”
Reviewed January 4, 2014 via mobile

We tried it because there is so much buzz around this restaurant lately and we were gteatly disappointed! Firstly the menu is very weird offering horse filet mignon and very expensive appetizers like 1 sausage for $17! Our waitress was like a sales person telling us that we should really pair our main meal with an appetizer and wine! She was so pusjy and when we told her no thank you she kind of ignored us! We ordered a speciality cornish hen in a brouth with lobster and the hen was overcooked and dry. At least when we told her the hen was dry she gave us a free dessert. All the tables are stuck together so don't expect to discuss anything with the person you're with unless you want the people sitting next to you to hear! We made reservations a month and a half in advance and was so not worth our time and especially not our money! Very expensive and I would suggest to avoid this pricy restaurant!

“You need to go at least once.”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

From the second you walk in, you will be charmed. Yes, it's small and gets a big noisy at night and doesn't have menus (you read off the chalkboard which changes daily) and is a bit dark. Honestly, the place is terrific and interesting and focuses on really, really good food.

The Double Down - order a half portion and get ready. You've never had anything like it. It's absolutely amazing - my 13 year old son just about lost his marbles over how good it is. We had beef and seafood - every single thing from appetizers to dessert was incredible. It's expensive, but you'll get past that quickly once you start tasting the food. You have to go.

“Absolute must!”
Reviewed December 17, 2013

Food and wine list are very extensive, varied and really ... beyond ordinary. Don't forget to visit their washroom for a little surprise mounted to the wall...shh I won't say more, so I don't ruin the surprise :)

“Mediocre at best”
Reviewed December 14, 2013 via mobile

Overinflated for no reason. The appetizers were greasy. The fried food gras was disgusting - a failed attempt to Americanize a classic dish. The pretzel was awful!!!! Yuck. The horse filet mignon was served to us cold. The wine selection was ok. The cellar is too cold and the $100 bottle of chianti was really really really bad. It's a 12-dollar bottle of wine. After such a disappointment we didn't even venture into desserts. Overall, greasy, bad food. Failed attempts! Chalk- board menu: no comment! There r many outstanding restos in the city. This is not one of them!!!! Go elsewhere!!!

“The Full Meal Deal”
Reviewed November 29, 2013

One of the greatest experiences when dinning out is when all the elements come together in the perfect storm to create a magical experience that leaves all the senses sated and satisfied. This for us was Joe Beef. The ambience of the restaurant was warm, wonderful and had a great buzz and vibe. Understandably people have identified the challenge of reading the chalk board menu's but the serving staff are very knowledgable and about the food and wine options so no need to worry about squinting or moving around to see the boards (although this can also be part of the fun). Our waiter Patrick was phenomenal! Friendly, warm, engaging and full of fantastic recommendations about what to try. As a bonus, he had a strong knowledge of wine that resulted in a fantastic and unique wine experience. The food was over the top comfort food. Wonderfully thought out, beautifully prepared and jam packed with flavours (be they delicate ones or big bold ones that hit you over the head). Oysters, Scallop and Sea Urchin to start (super fresh and amazing). The New York Steak (terrific) and the Venison (over the top amazing) as mains, with the fries cooked in beef fat and a delicate Mac and Cheese (YUM)This is big food fit for nurturing and nourishing ones body and soul. We loved everything about our Joe Beef experience!
