This review is actually about a restaurant happening within a restaurant, each from the extremes of the culinary world, yet merging perfectly into something that Montreal needs. During the recent Montréal en Lumière Festival, there was a focus on food from others cities, so from Philadelphia came chefs and restaurateurs Richard Landau and Kate Jacoby of Vedge, who are becoming famous for creating high-end vegetarian cuisine that pleases everyone's palate - meat lovers included. They are ardent advocates of local products and offer a classically elegant dining experience with a progressive, bold approach to cooking, all done without animal products: gourmet vegan! We visited Vedge in Philadelphia last fall and loved it; we came back to Montreal wishing something so refined and delicious existed in Montreal, a city where you either have vegan cafes lacking an upscale experience, or higher-end places with meat-centric menus.
So having Vedge create a seven course menu in a fine establishment like Laloux could not be missed! In partnership with chef Jonathan Lapierre-Réhayem, Richard and Kate created dishes we had to spend a few minutes appreciating the originality and uniqueness of before dining on; our server added to this appreciation by explaining each dish so enthusiastically, we forgot we were in a restaurant that has one non-meat dish on it’s main course menu. Combine this with perfectly paired natural wines courtesy of David Vincent, and you have a culinary experience that all food lovers must experience in life.
The best thing about this event (on February 26th and 27th, 2013) is that Kate and Rich proved to those in Laloux and those who attended (who weren’t already sure about this), that vegan food can be fulfilling, delicious, original and presented to a variety of restaurant goers in an upscale environment. Let’s hope this opens something up (literally!) for the Montreal restaurant scene, like our own version of Vedge!

We had a very nice diner at Laloux. The food is delicous and delicate. The only issue we had was the pricing were wrong. We choose the menu of the day and after we order, the lady came back to us saying there were a 10$ extra. But it was not written in it! We end up ordering A la carte. Apparently, English and French menu do not have the same pricing...

Thank you for the kind words. I do want to extend our apologies for the pricing mistake that occured on our menu the last time you visited. It was an unintentional mistake that got away from us. We do indeed charge the same price regardeless the language you choose. Fortunately for us people such as yourself are keeping us sharp as a knife.

Even though it is very difficult to find a parking spot, note the menu is interesting. Food is well cooked with many spices and different wyas for keeping the taste, Wine list is also good.

What a surprise on our first visit to Laloux. I had seen the restaurant many times but had never been there before. Everything about it was just great, although the wine list is a bit pricey.

I had passed by this place often never ended up going. I shouldn't have waited so long because it truly is a great restaurant to have a great dinner in a bistro atmosphere with a friendly service. We had our food paired with wine by the glass, whose selection was very nice. Had the foie gras as an appetizer and the duck as a main. Both were well prepared and tasted delicious. Some nice comforting food on a first cold weekend of the year in Montreal.
