Best bagels in Montreal. A must stop if you are in the city!!!! Great price - fast - and they sell cream cheese, jam even juice for a great breakfast in the park!

We happened on St. Viateur Bagel while on an evening walk. So very delicious. The secret, we are told, is that the bagels are boiled in salted honey water. I highly recommend stopping by to grab a dozen for the road...we did and munched on them the whole way home.

This was the quirkiest and perhaps the most rewarding thing we did in Montreal. It is quite a trip to get here from the center, and it is a long walk from the metro. But the walk takes you through fascinating residential areas of Mile End and Outremont, so you get to see real Montreal as part of the deal.
The Bagel shop is wonderfully bare bones, with sacks of flour stacked in the windows. The bagels are genuinely delicious - toothsome and dense and chewy, quite unlike NY bagels or even the stale regular bagels we got on VIA Rail the next day. We'd put them on a foodie "must-do list", which is not bad considering you get half a dozen for less than $4.
There is nowhere to sit. But there is a wonderful coffee shop just a block up St Viateur on the left, with fabulous Cafe Allonges. We ordered coffees, and then conspiratorially ate our bagels at one of their outside tables. We just loved the whole thing.

Bagels were hot and delicious. We took a few dozen home with us and ended up eating them in the car.

The bagels here were very good. They are made by hand and cooked in a brick oven, and you can see them baking inside the store. The bagels are thinner and flatter than the puffy, softer New York-style bagels we are accustomed to in the U.S. They had a very nice flavor. Montreal is known for its special bagels, and St-Viateur is supposed to have the best. Definitely worth a stop just to taste for yourself.
