“Average quality vegetarian food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2012

I visited the commensal for lunch on a recent trip to Montreal. I was disappointed to see that they are no longer vegetarian only. It made choosing which food to eat more complicated, as I had to pay careful attention to which dishes had meat and which didn't - they mixed them all in together.
There is still quite a good selection for a vegetarian, but I just wasn't impressed with the quality of the food. It was tasteless for the most part. No flavors really jumped out and grabbed me.
Too expensive for the quality of food and atmosphere of the place. If things were half as expensive there, it would be more worth it to go.

“Still good, but Commensal is NO LONGER VEGETARIAN”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

I am a long time customer of Le Commensal. As a vegetarian, I have depended on it as a place where you don't have to worry that anything is going to have meat. This is no longer the case. Le Commensal has made the very disappointing decision to add chicken, shrimp and crab dishes to their menu. I only found this out this week, so I am still digesting the news. The veggie dishes are still good, but for those who are looking for a restaurant with a purely vegetarian philosophy, with no worries whether the spoon for the veggie chili was also used for a dish with chicken, you can no longer count on Le Commensal

“Veggie paradise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

Fabulous food, at a reasonable price. Great choice of hot and cold dishes, and really delicious desserts. Of course, this is cafeteria style, so not to everyone's taste. No meat, because this is a vegetarian restaurant. Good views of the street and the people from the tables by the windows! Very convenient location in downtown Montreal, especially good for shoppers or anyone visiting McGill University.

“Great location for people watching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2012

And the good was good too. Not too expensive. Mostly just a very conveniently located restaurant -- just a couple of blocks from the bus station -- which is where we had just arrived when we took the bus from Quebec City to Montreal. (That too was a good price, with excellent services.)

“Overpriced and unfriendly.”

It was an interesting concept but the food was underwhelming. I found it overpriced. We had an alright dinner but do not plan to go again.
