“Honoured their reputation”
Reviewed May 3, 2013

L'express is a very well known French restaurant in Montreal, since the 80s'.
Reservations for evening dinner are sometimes required and hard to get.
I strongly recommend to go for lunch; less people, quick service and excellent cuisine !
(I haven't been in the evening, so I can't compare)
Lantilles & Chorizo soup = excellent
Beef tartar = excellent
Home-made raviolis = excellent
A must in Montreal ! Definitely worth to pay the price.

“I loved everything about it.”
Reviewed April 17, 2013 via mobile

Rainy Evening. All the same we decided to walk to L'express, As we could not get a taxi. My daughter insisted. She had been before and loved it. Well I loved it too. i loved everything about it. True it was close quarters. But the service was so attentive. The food was delicious. I had the chicken with the mustard sauce and my daughter had the ravioli. Both were excellent. I had the maple Crêpes for dessert and she had a piece of cheese based on the recommendation from our waiter who paired with the perfect glass of red wine. We also had a bottle of French wine 2001 vintage for $51, A steal. I also loved the atmosphere, And the decor. Highly recommended

“Can't go wrong - a classic”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

This place does not change. The menu rarely changes but its always great, you go back for the classics over and over again. Service is perfect, fast and courteous, get a table for privacy or the counter to see the crowd and chat a bit. Reservation is a must. Great wine selection. You do feel like you're in a small Parisian bistro but without the attitude of Parisian waiters. The 'mousse de foie de volaille avec pistache' is a must with the little pickles! Sometimes you find the 'canard au porto et cassis' on the menu specials, another must but it doesn't appear on the menu often enough in my taste. This place is amongst my favorites of Montreal.

“A classic”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

Its the classic french bistro in Montreal, sadly considered by many montrealers as a place mostly for tourists (evidence - the menu comes with a glossary in six languages....).

Still its really charming, the wait staff are attentive and informed, eager to please but not overly so. Wine list is good. The food can be uneven - beet salad is the reason to go now to this restaurant but the onglet (hangar steak served with fries) was far too overly salted (covered with salted butter pad, accompanied by very salty fries and salty mayo/mustard). The food here is reasoned portions (no american style over size dishes) and covers the bases re a classic french bistro - meats (duck confit, veal cheeks, some innards, chicken, beef), fish (octopus, sea bass, salmon, pot au feu), and veg here and there. Oh and the wonderful massive pot of cornichons on the table is so great. Its warm, a little noisy and salty - hydrate well.

It has a nice vibe and still feels authentic despite many many competitors for the best local bistro market. Long live l'express.

“Simply a Must!”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

An outstanding and dependable restaurant for classic French fare. Everything on the menu is very good and service is professional and attentive.French-speaking Montrealers see this place as part of the special fabric that makes their city distinct and worth caring about. Try dinner at the counter and be pampered by a pro. Reservations are a must.
