I attended a performance of Bharati, a group of Indian Dancers(Bollywood). The music that set the evening were a traditional group of musicians, very good. However it was the dancers and the very beautiful and coloful costumes that made the show. If you ever get a chance to see this troupe, go and see them, what a joyous occasion.

We went to the Opera de Montreal on February 02nd 2013 (our first experience) to see La chauve souris (or Die Fledermaus) from Johann Strauss II. It was a gift I gave to my wife (and to me) so that we could try something new. It's not considered as an opera per se, but more an operetta (for me, I saw that as a lighter version of a regular opera, so it's much more easier for a newbie like me). The costumes were wonderful, the music was great and it was funny. We also liked the Place des Arts where the opera was performed with all the artwork everywhere you look.

There was a mix of young and old people attending the piece, fashionistas, casual, artsy, etc... so whaterver you're wearing, you don't feel like you don't belong there. The only thing I found a bit hard was to sit on those tiny armchairs for almost 3 hours. Try and take seats in the middle, not on the sides so that you can have a look of everything that is going on on the stage. Not to near the stage so that you can read the subtitles on stage also.

Nonetheless, we appreciated our evening very much and recommend it.
