Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 25, 2011

We stayed at this hotel for a conference with our 3 month old son. Overall our experience was good, but we would not recommend the hotel for those with babies or small children.

The location is excellent - far enough up St. Denis to avoid the noise but close enough to walk both there as well as in the other direction to less crowded restaurants and shops.

Checking in and out: this is quite simply awkward. Here's where the quirky part comes in :). While the service is very good, if you have a baby or small children and a lot of stuff, you have to unload it on the curb, get it into a micro-sized lobby, and then take it up stairs (no elevator). If you are just on your own it is probably fine, but the stairs were hard with a baby (long flight to get up and down), especially with a buggy (which they were happy to store for us, but imagine having to call the front desk for your buggy every time you step out of the hotel). Also, you have to use the valet service, as there's nowhere to park, and this can take a long time. Service was very inconsistent with this, which is a pain. Lastly, when we checked out, they gave us no receipt! My husband didn't realize that I needed this for my company reimbursement, so I emailed them for one later. When it came it was not itemized! Just a total with tax broken down - very inconvenient, and I think unprofessionaly (and hard for reimbursement purposes).

Room: much smaller than the website suggests. Having not been in Montreal for over 10 years, I cannot comment on comparables, but this felt like Manhattan sizes. You know those cool, slightly more affordable hotels in Manhattan where they suspend the TV from the ceiling because of no space? It was minimally better than that. Having said that, they did manage to squeeze in the necessities - comfortable king bed, nice living area, interesting and cute furnishings in the African theme, and lovely bathroom with gorgeous jetted tub and shower. The only peculiarity was that the kitchenette was made from cheap IKEA stuff you'd see in a dorm room. No biggie, but not what I'd expect in a hotel.

Food: we love Ethiopian, but just due to circumstances we did not actually eat it while there in their restaurant. We did, however, order their breakfast and it was excellent. TIP: great for two, so you might want to order one breakie and share.

Service: except for the valet delay and the lack of receipt, everyone was extremely helpful and courteous, and we experienced very good service.

Summary: If I did not have a child I'd return, but I'd want to check out comparables before committing to that. According to many, accomodations in Montreal have slipped quite a bit in the last 10-20 years, so maybe this is much better for the money than I am reporting. But all in all, a great location, comfortabel room and good service.

We stayed in the Hotel Kutuma during what was predominantly a three-week tour of the East Coast of America, and boy, was the room and its facilities a sight for sore eyes after back-to-back travelling and eating out constantly. We were thrilled to bits by the kitchenette and fairly close proximity (10-12 minute walk) to a decent supermarket (on Saint Laurent), and happily made a couple of breakfasts and easy pasta/wine suppers while we were there. We definitely made the best of our little dining room, which, with its pre-set table and candles, was lovely and romantic.

The Kutuma offers the best of both worlds: good facilities for doing self-catering, and a top location if you fancy a short stroll to eat out. There was an array of wonderful looking eateries -and a nice bakery- within 100 metres, not to mention the Ethiopian restaurant downstairs, at which we enjoyed a really tasty and different meal. The staff at the Kutuma were so accommodating and, from whisking our far-too-heavy suitcases upstairs with a flourish on day one, looked after us brilliantly (even popping up to our room discreetly to leave a lovely dessert when we couldn't manage one in the restaurant!).

My partner and I said we would recommend this place to everyone and certainly return there ourselves should we ever be lucky enough to revisit Montreal. There's no denying that it's quite an expensive place to stay, but equally, we felt that our stay here was money well spent. A great experience.

Room Tip: Worth getting a room on one of the higher floors for privacy.

i reserved a one night deluxe suite for my bf's bday

i really wanted something with a jacuzzi so i searched all the hostels available
was thinking about hotel nelligan or this one
i took this one because of the three place jacuzzi but honestly it's a two place...
besides the jacuzzi, the hotel is very nice

the staff are very professional they even went to buy a pack of cigarettes for us
and gave us an extra hour for the check out which we didnt use but was nice to offer
the only downside was the lady did not tell me about the valet fee which i was advised after leaving the hotel with another staff who gave me my receipt
the other staff even called to ask if she told me about it
she said yes but never did and for the price i paid i would expect making a mistake is human
but admitting it, would of been nice

we ordered food in the room instead of going downstairs to the resto/bar
which i was disappointed because i honestly fell in love with the decor and nobody was in the restaurant so we were able to have it all for ourselves but my bf was tired and wanted to stay in the room
i found the food too spicy and the pancake were too cold theres only the chicken thing i liked(i dont remember the name)besides that i didnt like the other stuff(we ordered the 4choices)
but the cakes that they gave us were on the house which was very nice of them
and i LOVED the orange chocolate cake(its really good)

The room was very nice i loved everything about it
except the sofa would look better in a different color than yellow
there was a closet with alot of room to put your clothes if your staying for a couple of days plus a safe
the kitchen was pretty cool, you have everything you need
the fireplace is awesome i loved it
and the bathroom was my favorite part of the room
and the lights are fun because you can turn them high or low which is romantic

the balcony view isnt the best view and i could hear people moaning outside :s
but the tree was the saver because even though my bf didnt like the view i did because of that tree

i couldnt sleep all night not because of the bed
even though its a king size i didnt feel too comfortable and the pillows smelled weird

so in the end nice hotel but too pricey
will i come again?
probably not
but i will still recommend it to people

oh and honestly
if it wasnt for trip advisor i would of never have had noticed it on st denis

The location is great for a visit to the city, near lots of restaurants. The African themed decor is classy and elegant. The rooms have many nice touches (we looked at a few), and are spotless. The staff were very helpful.

Kutuma evidently means "Welcome" and it is well-named. The rooms are large with contemporary decor and a usable small kitchen. There is a great Ethiopian restaurant on the first floor that is affiliated with the hotel. Staff was extremely helpful, including directions and information about events. The hotel is convenient to the Old Port and other attractions, expecially using the Metro, and at the same time is in a non-touristy neighborhood that was very pleasant and interesting.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Kutuma for one night over Labor Day weekend. I didn't warn my husband about the safari themed decor and he was a little confused when we first arrived... but overall we had a wonderful stay.

Pros:
-Great location: lots of restaurants, bars, and shops on Rue St. Denis. About a 20 minute walk to Old Montreal.
-Very reasonable! We paid $100 plus tax!
-Kitchenette in room: mini fridge, coffee/espresso machine, dishes, stove top. If you were staying for several days it would be great to save some money on meals.
- Clean, updated bathrooms
- Very friendly staff

Cons:
- Can hear floors creaking above you and people in hallway/stairway
