I was in Montreal for a longer tan expected trip, and after not being able to extend on the airbnb condo, found Richards B&B via hotel.com... Le Cartier was exactlywhat I needed for that week end. One block away from the metro, which leads you everywhere. 10 minutes from downtown, some fun neighbourhood restaurants (try the poutine at Lafayette) and above all a gracious host.

Had plenty of room in the suite, including the office I neededto work at and the kitchen sharing was a great concept. Both Richard and Scott were very flexible and allowed me to leave my bags until last minute on my way out, which is always a Little extra touch one aappreciate. Gteat guys, great stay

Our first time in Montreal and we were not disappointed with the city or the great B&B we stayed at - Le Cartier. Very conveniently located close to Papineau Metro station, and in a lively area with lots of good places to eat. Richard was a gold mine of suggestions and recommendations and his "little black book" of restaurants showed his dedication to research! Scott kept the rooms and kitchen area clean as a whistle and was so helpful with anything we needed. Having the kitchen area and supplies was great for us and any other things we needed were available at the Metro Plus supermarket just near the station. If you need a hot breakfast choices are available locally and Richard can advise on them. Thanks for a great short stay and hope we can come again.

We very much enjoyed our stay in this B&B. Scot met us, helped find a parking space in front, and showed us around including maps and suggestions for places to see and do during our 2 night visit. We met Richard the second day and he was also helpful. The location is close to the metro and that is what we used to do our sightseeing. The B&B is very comfortable. The DIY met our needs. The beds were comfortable and that was very important to us. The suite is spacious and had all the amenities we like. However, we were disappointed that we did not get the suite that we reserved with the Queen bed and living room on the ground floor. We are not sure what happened but we got 2 double beds with an office on the 2nd floor. It was still very nice but my wife and I have been sleeping in the same bed together for over 42 years so it was weird.

We recently stayed at Le Cartier for 5 nights and were very pleased with our entire experience – great value and quality like a recent review stated. We had a room on the first floor with private bath. It was spacious and decorated nicely. Scott – the friendly housekeeper – kept the room spotless. Richard – the innkeeper/owner – was a pleasure to talk to, a wealth of knowledge and always helped us with our sightseeing and dinner plans. It’s in a great location near St. Catherine street. The metro is just down the street and will easily get you anywhere you want to go in Montreal.

We prefer a hot breakfast and there are several choices just a short walk away. I highly recommend L’Oeufrier at 1441Rue Amherst (see my review) just off St. Catherine (Richard recommended it to us and we ate there twice!).

If you are coming from the U.S., drinks are very expensive in Montreal and they measure everything, so you are better off with a bottle of wine or beer – or have some drinks in your room before dinner!

Le cartier
After getting off the Megabus from Toronto, We took the metro from Bonaventure to Papineau. As you exit the station there is a Metro Grocery chain. Thats always a good sign when you have a 12 and. 10 years who are always hungry at the wrong time of the day ! At first the walk to our Le Catier B&B seemed a little unsettling as I found the the neighborhood a little run down. However, the short walk ( 4 minutes) to Le Cartier put all doubts to rest when I rang the bell and Richard the Inn Keeper came down. He took us to the top floor where our rooms were located. Richard showed us the facilities, gave us a good run down of the neighbourhood, showed us the map of Montreal and advised us what to see. Previous posts have commented on his attitude some finding him arrogant. However, let me put that to rest. He is someone who was very proud of his city, highly opinionated (who isn't ) while displaying a wealth of information hidden with subtleties but I never found him to be condescending. What i could figure from our short meeting was he was proud his heritage but he considered himself North American not French.
As for the the rooms, it was good size. We got 2 double beds which were super comfy. There was a balcony which had a spiral staircase that led to a 'jardin'. It was a very picturisque setting but truth was we didn't have much time to enjoy it as our time was limited.
Now, the neighborrhood is what makes Le Cartier even more enjoyable. As you step out of the B&B you take a right and then a left on Rue Catherine. As soon as you start walking you will find a slew of restaurants and eateries. It was as if every second establishment was some sort of eatery. There is a restaurant recommended by Richard the 'Lafayette' where they serve the most wonderful poutine. i don't think you can visit Quebec and not try their version of poutine. Great cheese and even wonderful gravy. Therewere all kinds of restaurants- serving Steak, Asian gourmet, Lebanese, even a Mickey Dee's (MacDonalds). We tried the Lebanese the first night. It was plenty of food for $ 12 but I found the meat a little dry.
On our way back we stopped at the Metro Grocery store and stocked up on soft drinks and chips.
Don't read too much into the other reviews. This place is alright. Colorful, happening and convenient, just like the B&B, its owner Richard and the neigborhood. And one last point, there was one review that concerned me when it said this was not child friendly. I had both of my sons with me and trust me, we had no issues. Bring your kids. They will enjoy it.
Merci, Monsieur Richard !

Our stay at Le Cartier was nothing short of incredible.

Start with a fantastic and chic house (complete with traditional Montreal outdoor metal staircases) that's just a short walk from the Metro. Add to that Richard's personal insights on what to do, see, and eat in the city and Scott's attention to cleaning the tastefully done rooms... then you have a fantastic stay for a very reasonable rate.

The breakfast (serve-yourself continental that includes hot beverages) is far more preferable than appointed times, and helps to kick-start your day. Those croissants and jam got us pretty far before needing to stop for lunch!

Le Cartier Bed & Breakfast is a great choice for a down-to-earth home-base for your Montreal visit. The bed & breakfast is a cozy building that blends with its neighborhood. It is settled on a quiet street about a 3-minute walk away from hip restaurants, a supermarket, and one block away from a Metro station.

The room is wonderfully furnished. The bed is comfortable. The color-scheme is relaxing. The rooms are not missing anything and they are clean!

The breakfast that is offered is nothing extraordinary since it was just a continental breakfast, hence you will have croissants, a choice of cereals, etc. Honestly, when choosing a place to stay, I do not weigh heavily on the breakfast offered. There are plenty of great places to eat in the area... Go out and experience them—you're in a city! However, the coffee and small meal is good enough to tide you over in the morning.

The parking situation is not optimal, but the staff will help you find a suitable spot for your car—it is (free) street parking. We parked the car once and didn't have to move it until we left.

Staying at Le Cartier B&B makes you feel like a citizen of Montreal. It makes you feel like an autonomous city-dweller in a chic apartment. I recommend this place for a romantic stay, friends, and families.

Room Tip: Some rooms do not have private bathrooms. Make sure you choose that option if with a couple or are p...
