My wife and I took the Metro and then a short walk to the Jean-Talon Market! A great place to go for fresh produce (fruit, vegetables, etc). There's a permanent fish market that has a friendly and informative staff.

Wonderful produce brought in by the growers. Quality was outstanding. The displays were artistically done - beautiful. Don't miss the bakeries, spice shop , and honey+maple sellers.

For a nice diversion, spend a couple of mid-day hours touring the Jean Talon Market. An abundance of colorful and well-displayed fruits and vegetables along with specialty foods such as honey, maple syrup and hot pepper sauces. You'll want to take a lot of pictures. We had lunch at an outside table at the sausage shop across the street from the rear of the market where the sausage sandwiches were well dressed and good tasting. There should be more prepared food offerings at the market because it will stimulate your taste buds. If visiting from the United States, be aware of what can or cannot be brought back across the border as the vendors are not aware of United States laws. You will also get a chance to practice your French here, but the vendors try to get their points across in English when they can.

This decently sized market boasts a wide variety of local produce and artisanal food products. The quality of the late-summer fruits and vegetables was excellent, and most sellers allow you to sample before purchasing. There are also a number of vendors selling prepared food and drink, so you could spend quite a long time there.

this is the best fun in Montreal. I don't know that we enjoyed anything more than Jean-Talon (we were in M. for 6 days). I know that my wife definitely took more photos here than anywhere else! The produce in September was spectacular; the displays unbelievable; the cooked food, cheeses, antipasti, maple products fabulous. And restaurants and food stores on the streets bordering the market. Very accessible by Metro. A not-to-be-missed part of any trip to Montreal.
