“Upscale boutique hotel in Old Montreal”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

My family spent two nights at the hotel during our stay in Montreal. The hotel has a sophisticated modern vibe within walking distance to Old Montreal restaurants and shops, Notre-Dame Basilica and the Port area. The hotel is actually multiple buildings (three I think) and we were in the newest section. Everything was clean, fresh and modern. We stayed in an executive suite which had a separate bedroom and living area with a pullout couch. Perfect size for our family of four. The bath and shower were amazing. I love the complimentary fluffy bathrobes, evening waters and chocolates - such a little thing but I think it makes guests very happy. The staff were all professional. Valet guys were very helpful and friendly (and cute too!). If you want to stay in a hotel in the Old Montreal area I would definitely recommend staying here. However, I don't think the hotel is so convenient to other areas in the city. It is quite a walk to the "downtown" area near St. Catherine, Mcgill and the museums (at least 20 blocks) and we ended up taking the subway and taxis quite a bit. Old Montreal is fun and a must do in the city but I think I would prefer to stay in the downtown area and come in for dinner to Old Montreal. Nevertheless, the hotel was a great choice in the area.

My wife and I travel to Montreal from Toronto for weekend getaways at least 3 times a year. We have stayed at many hotels but have settled on Le Place D'Armes as our favorite place to stay. It is perfectly located in Old Montreal, near shops, restaurants and many points of interest. We always stay in a junior suite with balcony. The rooms have all the amenities and we particularly like the large soaker jacuzzi tubs and the large rain showers. The exposed brick walls add to the charm. The concierge service is excellent and the staff is always helpful and friendly. We always take advantage of the Rainspa, the steam room and massage service is also excellent. The complimentary drinks in the restaurant Suite 701 are a nice touch. The rooftop patio is a great place to enjoy a summer drink, it is very popular. The restaurants in the hotel are very good. This is a great hotel, we have never been disappointed, it's become our home away from home. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for 7th floor balcony junior suite

We just spent three nights here and loved the hotel. Its location in Old Montreal could not have been better. Walking distance to the subway, Chinatown, restaurants and even the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts if you are up for a bit of a longer walk. The Hotel is elegant and sophisticated. Our room was tremendous. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. A good gym with new equipment that they keep maintained. The real treasure is La Terrasse Place d'Armes, their open-air rooftop bar and restaurant that overlooks the Notre-Dame Basilica. Beautiful views in the day or evening.

We spent four nights in an Executive Suite here and came away with mixed feelings about the hotel. There were many things we absolutely loved about the hotel, but there were also some serious problems which will make us think twice about staying here again. Here's the breakdown.

The Good.

- The room was lovely. It was a two story loft with exposed brick, perfectly furnished and with a huge bathroom. It felt like we had an apartment rather than just a hotel room. It is definitely worth the upgrade.

- The staff was extremely friendly. Service from the bars to the restaurants to the maids to the front desk were friendly and efficient. Definitely 5 star. (If you are worried about the language, don't. Pretty much everyone we met in Montreal spoke both fluent French and fluent English and were able to masterfully switch back and forth with ease).

- The location was perfect for a first time trip to Montreal. There were shops, bars and restaurants all around us. It was a block from the Metro. Everything we wanted to do was easily walkable. We were travelling with our eleven year old daughter and were able to walk to kid friendly places like the old port and science museum, and the street performers in old city. It was also an easy subway ride to the Bio dome and Botanical Gardens. Don't forget to order some Poutain while in Montreal. It was our favorite snack.

The Bad

- The air conditioner in the bed room blew directly onto the bed, which meant spending the night alternately freezing and sweating as it turned off and on. I don't know if that was specific to our room or the normal setup in all the rooms.

- This could be good or bad depending upon your perspective. The bars here are very popular. It is also a popular place for wedding receptions. There is nothing to stop bar patrons from wandering the hotel. This meant that on Saturday night the hotel was full of noisy drunk people until the wee hours of the morning. If you are there with a family, this is definitely a negative. If you plan on staying up and drinking anyways, then I guess this is a positive feature.

- There is just one elevator for both guests and staff (in other words there is not even a service elevator). During busy times it could be quite a long wait for it. We were on the seventh floor, so walking the stairs was not really an option. This was particularly a problem on Saturday night as guests, staff and the patrons of the roof top bar were all trying to use the elevator at the same time.

Overall this was a very nice hotel. If you are a night owl, the popular bar scene is likely a positive. I am not sure we would stay here again over a weekend though.

We absolutely adored this hotel. Our room was gorgeous--from the exposed brick walls to the spacious sitting area, the sumptuous linens and modern appointments. The bed is beyond comfortable. The suite was huge. The wifi is free..no hassles. The staff is so incredibly accommodating. They anticipate every need before you even know you have a need! The parking is free.
I highly recommend this hotel

My nineteen year old daughter and myself vacationed there for four nights in mid -July 2013. Our room was spotless, of adequate size and well appointed. The linens were crisp and changed daily. The beds/pillows very comfortable Every employee went out of there way to be hospitable and friendly. I especially commend the restaurant wait staff, the concierge staff, the desk staff and the doormen We enjoyed drinks, breakfasts and two dinners at their in-house restaurant and were very impressed with the atmosphere, food and the professionalism and friendliness of all wait staff. We took a two-day side trip to Quebec City during our stay and we were welcomed back like old friends. Le Place d' Armes Hotel was like our home away from home. We recommend this hotel to everyone.
