Description: Damas, an upscale Syrian restaurant located on Avenue Van Horne. You will be charmed by the Oriental decor and most impressed by their refined and rich cuisine. This modern but authentic gastronomy will make your mouth water with all their specialties starting from the fattouche, the appetizing mouth-melting lamb leg to the cherry kebab. The blend of aromas and the tasting of the delicious preparations will make the experience worthwhile.

We have eaten at many middle eastern restaurants and we can confidently say that Damas Cuisine Syriennet stands out as absolutely the best. The Syrian cuisine and warm service and the friendly happy atmosphere can impact your pre-judgements about Syria (if you have any!). The dishes are all subtly flavored and its best to order a number of them and share (each is of ample size for sharing). It's hard to select what was the best dish, they all were terrific, but be sure to order the eggplant dish and the octopus dish (I've never gone out of my way to order octopus but this dish is fantastic). And the service at this small intimate restaurant is great - a very memorable evening.

Although we were unfamiliar with the menu, our waiter was forthcoming with many excellent suggestions. The salad and salad-like appetisers we had complimented well the lamb main course. The dishes were light and delicate.

When walking out of the restaurant at the end of a perfect meal you say: "I'll have to come back to try this" (that is whatever the person at the next table was enjoying) you know you have to let others know that this meal was worth every penny.

It was two of us.
We started with an appetizer of Muttabal de betteraves (pureed beets)...a house specialty that the waiter said we should try...to die for.
That was followed by Maqlouba d'aubergines (eggplants) and the Fattet Magdous.
We shared, the plates are huge.
Both dishes were an absolute pleasure to savour.

You could well go for a couple of appetizers, and one main, that would be enough.

Finish that off with a sweet treat Baklava and that makes for one of the best diners I have had in a long time.

for two, without wine, around 65$ plus taxes and tip.

Go for a date, a romantic diner, a group diner, the setting of the restaurant is good for all of those. There are table and cushioned wall seats. It's all very comfortable. I was suprised by the high-end feel of the restaurant, but it didn't make any of us feel out of place.

All-in-all, we enjoyed the food at Damas tonight, and it brings us pride as Syrians after seeing the rave reviews it got in the media and on blogs. Hopefully Montrealers will now know how Syrian cuisine really differs from its more common Lebanese counterpart. The restaurant still needs to work a bit on its service, but we will definitely be back.

Went there for a friend's birthday dinner. Was curious to try out Syrian cuisine. Ordered a lamb dish.....simply succulent and absolutely tasteful. The staff was extremely friendly and very welcoming, ready to explain any item on the menu. I was pleasantly surprised and am definitely looking forward to going back there again, and this time taking more friends! Great food!
