“SO much better than I expected!”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

I was really surprised by Hotel de Paris. It is centrally located and perfect for taking the metro, bus, or even walking. I read some pretty crappy reviews here about bugs and walls that were paper thin and was ready to cancel our booking. However, I figured that for one night I could tough it out, and I’m glad that I did. When we arrived in the hotel, we were greeted by super friendly front desk staff. We were there way too early to check in, so we left our bags and came back to check in around 2, 5 hours later. The hotel itself is old but very nice. The hostel was in the basement, and the hotel portion of it was upstairs. We were on the second floor, right in the middle. Our room was very very small. There was a queen size bed and about 2 feet of space on each side of the bed to move around in. It wasn’t much, but it was all that we needed. It was very clean and nice looking. The bathroom was a good size, with a nice shower, but there wasn’t any shampoo or conditioner which would have been nice. When we were leaving, I peaked into a few open doors of other hotel rooms, and most of them were quite a bit bigger but equally as clean. As for the noise, we never heard anyone all night. The walls were definitely not that thin because we couldn’t hear the two people who were in the room next to us at all.

Free internet was included as was free breakfast. There are two free breakfast options at the hotel, or about 10 more which you can get for 4$. I got the free one which was a croissant and some fruit. It wasn't much, so it would be worth it to get something a bit bigger and pay the four dollars. My boyfriend got the Mitch breakfast and was very happy with it.

Room Tip: I believe you can ask for a bigger room is you need anything bigger than what I had.

Dear Rachel1073,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. We too are glad that you decided to give us a try, despite some other comments, and found that our location, friendly service, design and clean rooms were worth it.

The description you provide sounds like one of our Budget rooms; small but cozy, they’re the perfect choice for guests wanting to take advantage of our central location and explore vibrant local neighborhoods. Although our Front Desk does provide Shampoos and conditioners, among other items, upon request, I am sorry that that information wasn’t communicated to you when you checked-in.

As you mentioned, we do have other room categories to offer, eight in fact. Each category offers a distinct character and size to meet particular needs. Just as our breakfast options do…

Rachel1073, we truly appreciate your comments and sincerely hope that you will continue to try us out when visiting Montreal in the future.

Feels like a former youth hostel converted into a cozy hotel.

positive:
- Staff (very helpfull and friendly, willing to help you out to find parking)
- Well located
- cheap
- free breakfast

negative:
- can be noisy (paperthin walls.... old building, can't do much about that)
... that's about it!

My only suggestion: a hook on the bathroom door would be usefull.

We got there and it was a good surprise for us. The hotel lobby is nice and clean, smells good and is pretty. Since it's christmas time, they decorated the place with great attention so we were off for a good start. I don't know why people bother with the parking ? I lived in Montreal for 6 years, this hotel is well located and you can easily park your car right in front of the hotel for free, which we did and the car stayed there from friday night to sunday night without a problem...

We had an executive room, which is on the other side of the street. Rooms are big and there's no carpets (woodfloor). We were happy with the room and thought it was a good deal for the price we paid.

The breakfast was included. It is served in a tiny place under the hotel. It is not much, but you get it for free so it's ok :) We appreciated it anyways.

The only things we didn't like so much (and at the same time here is some suggestions for the hotel):

- We had trouble with the shower: it was noisy and it was difficult to adjust the temperature
-We could easily hear the traffic: I know Sherbrooke street is a place where there is lots of circulation, but maybe one day, new windows could help with this
- People made lots of noise with the doors, walking in the hall and stuff : There should be a carpet in the hall so it would make less noise then walking on hardwoodfloor, the door between the corridor and the staircase should be closed in all times, and maybe you should put signs remembering people to keep quiet.

We did had a good experience and would got there again ! So you should give it a try :)

Dear Espionne_Russe,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and providing us with your suggestions.

We are glad you enjoyed our holiday decorations. We have made a special effort this year to make an impression.

Your suggestions for our annex building across the street correspond exactly with our improvement plans we already have in place. We recently discovered a way to regulate the water temperature in our showers by refitting the fixtures with regulators. As for the noise, we are sorry you were disturbed by the coming and going both inside and outside the building. We have already acted on lessening some of the noise and are continuing to improve soundproofing by carpeting the hallways and installing dampeners on the doors to prevent slamming.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Hotel de Paris in Montreal so we can show you how much we value your suggestions.

Stayed here in December this year. Had noticed a huge difference from about 10-years ago when I stayed last. Big improvements in the newly renovated rooms; beds and blankets/pillows made us want to stay in bed forever... so comfortable. Clean and tidy, new television and renovated showers. Great location, conveniently footsteps away from downtown without being too close or too far. Friendly receptionists and tasty "Thai" breakfast. Good value and good price. Would stay here most definitely again. Very impressed by the changes.

The neighborhood is ok at best. the staff or there lack of, the one guy standing behind the desk wasn't helpful with the parking situation which is 15$ a day instead of free which is what they lead you to believe. after you get past the bad service at the desk you will have to cross the street to another building which apparently is the hotel. once you're in the room you are welcomed by dirty bed sheets, no bathroom amenities, very poor quality television, and finally the worse part of it all is that there were roaches in the room, i killed two of them within an hour of being in the room. for the price you're better off paying for a garage and sleeping in your car. spend a little more and get a hotel that's worth it.

Room Tip: Go with a different hotel all together this one is just not worth it.

Dear youness e,

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments following your recent stay at Hotel de Paris, Montreal.

We are truly sorry for the service and information you received regarding parking options around the hotel. Given our favorable location - at the crossroads of 3 vibrant neighborhoods - we are very lucky to have eight street sides where free parking options are available to our guests. When these options are no longer available, we offer garage parking at a rate of $15. per night.

In response to your comments regarding our accommodations; you requested and were assigned one of our "Executive" rooms, which are located in the "Annex" located directly across the street from the main building. These rooms are especially popular due to their being larger than our "Standard" or "Budget" rooms, but, are nonetheless, subject to Hotel de Paris' high standards of cleanliness, and so I am personally investigating your claim... In 2012 we began upgrading our television systems and will continue into 2013 so as to enhance our cable television offerings to our guests.

Unfortunately, with the sudden change of weather, insects will find their way into the building and what you witnessed in your room was a harmless millipede rather than a roach. Although rare, in our climate, the sudden change in temperature can be attributed to this but is very isolated. Our staff was happy to relocate you to another room for your comfort.

In light of this, and our gratitude for your comments we sincerely hope you would consider giving Hotel de Paris another chance on your next visit to Montreal.

The hotel was ok, great location however the room was so so. Could hear everything happening in the room nextdoor...tv, conversation...even keys...I sometime got scared that they could open my door.
If that doesn't bother you, then this hotel is adequate.
I must say that the night shift staff is fine.
