“Find Someplace Else”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for 1 night in a non-smoking room with a king sized bed. We were on the 3rd floor. The place was tolerable, but it wasn't a great place to stay. The rooms and the place in general, including the TV, are all dated. The wall paper is peeling off in spots. There was a bar fridge in the room, but it was full of black mildew. The front desk said the fridge was not supposed to be in use, but regardless it was unlocked/open and very unhealthy/disgusting inside. There's no hotel restaurant or pool or exercise room. There's also ino parking available at the hotel and so we had to park 2 blocks away at a public lot that charged $10 for 24 hours. When we first arrived we were an hour early and our room wasn't ready. So we parked near the hotel in what we thought was a good spot, and we walked around the area. When we returned to our car a couple of hours later we had a $52 parking ticket - the parking signage there was extremely misleading. A free continental breakfast was available the next morning, but it was nothing special. For example, my wife likes hot tea which you'd think would there, but they didn't have any. The hotel is within walking distance of Chinatown district and Old Montreal, which are both worth seeing. Overall I would NOT stay at this hotel again and could not recommend it to friends or family.

Not the best of hotels for the money. In a slightly sketchy neighborhood. Carpeting is old. Bathroom ceilings not well re-done (cracks). Fire sprinkler in bathroom was covered in plastic obviously not working and not to building code. Not sound proof, someone's dog and music playing until the wee hours of the morning. Could hear the guy next door horking up phlegm in the morning (totally gross). If you can avoid this place, stay elsewhere. There are cheaper and nicer places if you book a couple of weeks in advance.

Room Tip: stay elsewhere if you can

When we got into the room and checked bed bugs, we were surprised to find the box sat on top of a plywood frame with only a single support across the middle. The frame also did not cover the box spring, leaving about x inches overhang. Of course, when we sat down, it slipped into the void and we tipped over. We're staying the night, but this would be intolerable for a longer stay.

I and six friends stayed here from 23 August to 26 August (2013) in two double rooms. The morning we were to leave, I looked up some reviews and became a little worried. These fears were soon allayed.

The location was easy to find, being so close to rue Sherbrooke. Upon arriving at the hotel, we were greeted by a very nice concierge and the check-in process was very easy. During our trip it rained and our party walked in soaked, and the concierge insisted we wait for him to bring us some towels to dry off with! They also provided us with various sundry items as needed. All of the concierges spoke great English.

When we got into the rooms they were neat and in order. As you do not pay huge amounts of money to stay at the Hotel des Arts, the room was plain and not fancily renovated, but was good value for what we paid.

The beds, billed as Queen sized, were in fact doubles, but worked perfectly well for sleeping in.

The WiFi worked in one of the rooms very well, and was patchier in the one next door. Each room has its own individual air conditioning unit, which we were able to set easily.

The bathrooms were again basic, but were clean and well provisioned with towels for two or maybe three people, but the staff were very helpful and provided us with more as we needed.

The breakfast included in the price is very basic (someone called it a perfect hangover breakfast: mini croissants and pains au chocolat, bagels, bananas, toast, juice, tea, coffee, cereal), but lived up to its billing. Tables in the lobby/breakfast area went quickly, but we were able to take some food back up to the rooms (no room service, but for evening snacks there is a pizza/wings place open until 4 a.m.just at the end of the block which also delivers).

But for food and drinks, the Hotel des Arts is a short walk away from rue St. Laurent, rue Ste. Catherine, and many other alimentary amenities.

As a note, there were no "Do Not Disturb" signs on the back of the doorknobs, but we just asked the housekeeping staff to not clean our rooms. Some did not speak English, but a "pas de service" will suffice for any non-French speakers.

For anyone seeking a vacation where the hotel is a destination unto itself, this hotel is not for you. It is, however, perfect for a group of friends or a family who want to stay somewhere centrally located in Montreal at a discount price, and for anyone in this category, I highly recommend the Hotel des Arts.

Room Tip: The Double "Queen" rooms are actually Double "Double" rooms, but still good valu...

The Hotel is ok for 1 or 2 nights. The PROBLEM and is the case in many hotel, they put and advertise that they provide WiFi in all the place in the hotel. In the room and in the public area. In fact it's false. Impossible to connect in the room and the signal is so low even in the lobby. It's always my first request when I do a search for an hotel and sometime it's very good and sometimes it's very bad, specially when the staff try to impute the problem to your computer.

Anyway I hate when I don't have the right picture.

Room Tip: Before...check in ask to check the internet connection...of course if it's important for you

Despite all the bad reviews I loved this hotel. We came to Montreal for a weekend to celebrate a birthday and stayed here. The service was the best part of the hotel. The desk Attendent Rodney was so helpful and kind. He told us which bars to go to and which to avoid. He spoke very good English so this was also very helpful for us being from Ontario. I would and plan on going back here soon because it was a very fun experience.

I had booked this hotel using a $95 Team Buy voucher for 1 night and 1 bottle of sparkling wine (Spanish cava).  I stayed two nights and that was probably 2 nights too many.  It shouldn't be listed as a 3-star because it is more like a 2-star.  If it was accurately rated, I would've either expected less or elected not to stay here.

The hotel is incredibly shabby and run-down.  The hall carpets were so disgusting, I was relieved that my room had newly installed laminate floors.  However, the bathroom, while mostly clean, was incredibly beat up and could use a refresh.  The shower curtain was absolutely covered with mildew and should have been changed eons ago.  The bottom of the curtain was literally black with mildew.

The air conditioner, when turned on, sprayed clouds of dust into the room.  As a result, we would leave it on when we were out of the room and shut it off when we were in the room just to keep the airborne dust particles to a minimum.  We didn't open the windows because they (and the curtains) were filthy.  The window also faced an abandoned lot that was filled with debris and overgrown with weeds.  It also afforded and excellent view of the sketchy part of St-Laurent.  Hence, ghetto fabulous.

The bed was not comfortable at all.  The mattress was lumpy and sagged heavily in the middle.  The pillows have also seen better days.  While I wasn't expected a down-filled, medium firm, over-stuffed pillow, I also expected more than a flat-as-a-pita pillow. The linen was very questionable, but I didn't get bitten by anything so I think they were tolerable.

There was a complimentary continental breakfast in the main lobby/dining area, but considering the state of the rooms, I didn't dare eat there.  It's not like there's a shortage of good breakfast options in Montreal.

On the plus side, I was able to park for free on the street for all three days. Location was pretty good, and staff are friendly and courteous. But even with a Team Buy voucher, I feel that this stay was not worth the price that I paid.
