After a few days enjoying eating out on our holiday in Quebec (Montreal and Quebec City), we decided to go to Bocata on our last evening before returning to London.
Only a few minutes walk from our hotel (Nelligan) we had decided to eat there before the hotel concierge recommended it as one of the best amongst many in Old Montreal.
Bocata is a mix of wine bar and restaurant and from the moment you walk in, it is evident that all the staff have a strong connection with where they work. The ethos behind Bocata is explained as part of the welcome - high quality ingredients locally sourced where possible paired with wines from around the world chosen for their quality and provenance.
Bocata is small and you are able to eat at tables or enjoy wines and sharing platters of charcuterie or cheeses at the bar. This gives the restaurant a very casual and welcoming ambience much like a European establishment.
There is a very large wine with the usual high Canadian prices but also a selection of reds, whites and 'bubbles' chalked up on a blackboard and available as small or large glasses. This selection is very varied and includes an Albarino from north western Spain and an unusual white from the volcanic Greek island of Santorini.
As our waiter Laurent explained, the dishes are not North American sized - not small like tapas and more European in size which is reflected by the pricing - appetisers around $ 11 and man courses around $15-$19.
We chose some Spanish Pata Negra ham and a duck confit with rocket (aragula) followed by Veal with risotto and Arctic Char both of which were wonderful with very defined flavours. Local Quebec cheeses with great sourdough bread completed our meal.
At $ 145 including a beer, sherry and 2 glasses of wine, it wasn't cheap but only £20 more than a much inferior meal the night before.
The best meal we had during our holiday and excellent service from Laurent who had recently returned from working in London for 8 months and who was more than happy to talk about his experiences there.
Can't praise Bocata enough - just go there!
