“Freshness, creativity and wondrous flavor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

beautifully located in Old Montreal and within easy walking distance of the Old Port, Chinatown and the Business District in Montreal, Bocata is a small restaurant specializing in tapas and wine pairings.
The decor is rustic, dark, but cosy and very comfortable. There is also bar seating available.
While the menu that evening listed many tempting selections, the waiter offered us the choice of ordering off the menu or allowing them to make the selections. Of course we decide to allow them to choose our menu. Wine pairing were offered by the full or half glass. The half glass is a very generous serving and was perfect to accompany our plates.
We served four different plates in a gradation of textures and flavors, starting with a smoked herring on fresh pea puree, to end with veal medallion served perfectly pink on manchego polenta and a deconstructed boeuf bourguignon. While my favorite was the veal medallion, I must say that all dishes exuded freshness and creativity without taking away from the traditional richness of the bourguignon, for example. This chef understands the value of locally sourced foods and the staff is justly proud to serve the dishes prepared in the kitchen. In fact, we were profusely thanked twice, for allowing them to make our selections.
The staff is attentive and discrete. They are also very able to explain and suggest dishes to patrons who may be new to this concept.
I can't wait to return.

“Good Despite the Limitations!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

In summation, quite exceptional food for those that like what is on the eclectic menu. However, if you are gluten or lactose intolerant as was one member of our party, don't expect even the slightest alteration in the chef's preparation!?! With this in mind, a wonderful outing can be found here despite the mediocre service....

Aside from that, a nice quaint and intimate yet happening establishment where the veal and guinea fowl are respectively truly extraordinary and incomparable!

“Intimate atmosphere, delicious food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 25, 2012

We stumbled upon Bocata in Old Montreal quite by accident and were lucky enough to be seated without a reservation. Plates are small, tapas style offerings....not really large enough to share with table mates. Our family of four ordered seven different plates throughout a lengthy dinner and were very pleased with each one. The new guinea fowl was a favorite and offered the most generous portion. Arugula salad with duck was also delicious as was the pasta with seafood. Memorably prepared dishes with top quality ingredients.
The restaurant's atmosphere is endearing and intimate. Tables are situated very close together and the feeling is rustic and old world. Service is top notch yet not pretentious. Attentive but not intrusive. Bartender Eric was especially attentive and helpful. Wine offerings are extensive.
Prices are high. Our bill was close to $300 including gratuity. However, we will return on our next visit to Montreal as this little restaurant is just too special to miss.

“Small restaurant, small plates, big flavours”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2012

This sibling to Barrocco (next door) offers a menu of small plates, which can be shared. We were five (two adults and three children) and ended up sampling a good chunk of the menu.

Overall the food was excellent. We particularly liked the pata negra (a sort of prosciutto), the duck with arugula, and the guinea fowl (our four-year old loved this).

Deserts were fabulous. We shared some extremely chocolately brownies with a salty caramel sauce. The accompanying blueberry ice cream was somewhat disappointing however - not intense enough.

Bocata works with small wineries to fashion its wine list. Our waiter recommended a Sérine, Montirius Côtes du Rhone 2008 on the basis of having met the winemaker. It was excellent.

Service was excellent, and the restaurant had no difficulty accommodating our three lively children. The small plates concept means that no children's menu is needed.

The room, in an old building in old Montreal, with exposed stone masonry, and a wood ceiling, was enchanting.
