beautifully located in Old Montreal and within easy walking distance of the Old Port, Chinatown and the Business District in Montreal, Bocata is a small restaurant specializing in tapas and wine pairings.
The decor is rustic, dark, but cosy and very comfortable. There is also bar seating available.
While the menu that evening listed many tempting selections, the waiter offered us the choice of ordering off the menu or allowing them to make the selections. Of course we decide to allow them to choose our menu. Wine pairing were offered by the full or half glass. The half glass is a very generous serving and was perfect to accompany our plates.
We served four different plates in a gradation of textures and flavors, starting with a smoked herring on fresh pea puree, to end with veal medallion served perfectly pink on manchego polenta and a deconstructed boeuf bourguignon. While my favorite was the veal medallion, I must say that all dishes exuded freshness and creativity without taking away from the traditional richness of the bourguignon, for example. This chef understands the value of locally sourced foods and the staff is justly proud to serve the dishes prepared in the kitchen. In fact, we were profusely thanked twice, for allowing them to make our selections.
The staff is attentive and discrete. They are also very able to explain and suggest dishes to patrons who may be new to this concept.
I can't wait to return.
