“A Great Find”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Stayed at Hotel Quartier des Spectacles for 3 nights at the end of September. I found the hotel to be fantastic. It has been newly renovated and does a terrific job of integrating the building's original brick work with modern materials. The rooms are bright and clean, have flat screen TVs and very effective air conditioning units. The hotel's location is ideal. You are close to downtown, Old Montreal, the waterfront and Chinatown. There are lots of great restaurants and coffee shops nearby . You are also in the heart of the entertainment district. In fact, Place des Arts is right around the corner. There is even an IGA just down the block for people who want to save a few dollars on dining out costs. In addition, the area is very safe, fun and lively. The staff were also very friendly and informative. The price was very reasonable. I felt I got great value for my money. I would stay here again without question.

Room Tip: The street in front of the hotel can be a bit noisy (I was there on a weekend), but I didn't fin...

Stayed for a week and was within walking distance of all the tourist spots and lots of good restaurants.
They have no elevator so I didn't like hauling my suitcase up two flights of stairs.
The rooms and lobby are clean and neat. Looks as if everything is new, even the paint. Nice wood parquet floors.
Desk clerk spoke English and was helpful. Not a ritzy place, but more than adequate. Good neighborhood, and good price.

Thank-you for your review. The new wing of the hotel was opened in May of 2012. Being a historic building, it was impossible to put an elevator. We hope to see you again on your next trip.

Sandwiched between two sex shops, it is in a fine location - especially since we were there for the comedy festival, which was right outside. The rooms are fine, fairly clean and simple. Nothing special, though, so I can't figure out why others give it such rave reviews.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a quiet room since the street is busy and loud quite late.

Thanks for your comments. We read each review attentively and always look at ways to continue to improve our service to guests. I am not sure if your room was in the original part of the building or in our new wing; we have a variety of room types to meet the needs of most guests.....budget, standard, studio or superior rooms. Our hotel has been awarded a 2012 Tripadvisor excellence award due to guest ratings, as well as named the best value two star hotel in downtown Montreal. We are particularily proud of the cleanliness of our rooms and our personnel. If you are not fully satisfied, do not hesitate to check with staff or the manager. We aim to please.

I'll take the optimistic approach and start with the pros:

1. The location of the hotel is excellent. Very close to the Old City with the major attractions, theaters and many restaurants. Everything is within a walking distance.

2. The staff is friendly and efficient.

3. The room is nice and clean and the entire complex has been renovated.

That's all for the pros, now for the cons, in the order of appearance:

1. The hotel is located in quite dubious neighborhood, amongst many strip bars with plenty of shady characters walking around. The entrance itself is right next to a sex shop. Walking near the hotel is very unpleasant, and that's an understatement.

2. Parking is 20$ per night, in cash.

3. We got a room at the third floor with no elevator!

4. The in-room air conditioner sounded like a construction site, making a terrible noise.

5. WiFi access was very poor. Very week signal that kept disconnecting, with a very low speed.

6. Though the room is equipped with double windows, they are not cancelling the street noise, which is very noisy at night.

7. There are pipes of the fire extinguishing system right under the ceiling, just above your head!

Bottom line: the hotel is not THAT cheap and I would expect more. That's right, this is a two stars hotel, but today's standards dictate a higher value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the first floor, there is no elevator!

Thank you for your comments. I am pleased that you appreciated our renovated accomodations, the cleanliness of our rooms and the friendliness of our staff. Our hotel was built in a historic building and since we do not have the main floor of the establishment, we were unable to put an elevator. The area does have remnants of the old red light district but is in full transition and now houses all of the major theatres and festivals of Montreal, hence the city has designated this area the Quartier des Spectacles. There are numerous parking lots in the vicinity and for city center are quite reasonably priced at $15 to $20 per day. I am not sure if you notified the reception regarding the noise of the airconditioner....we would gladly have transfered you room if that one was faulty. We aim to meet the needs of all of our clients and wish we would have met all of yours.

Stayed here for 3 nights with my girlfriend and another couple. I have to say that when we first got to the outside of the hotel we were not very pleased. The hotel was on top of a sex shop(no elevator) and across the street there was an abandoned building. We had arrived in the middle of the night and the only people that were out were drunk partygoers(fine by me) and homeless bums asking for money. Parking outside is scarce and requires you to wake up in the morning to fill the meter, however the front desk informed us of nearby parking garages which were great. The actual hotel itself is very different from its surroundings. The first thing we noticed is that the hotel was very clean and well-taken care of. The front desk was very knowledgeable and friendly. They seemed very concerned about their reviews and what their customers thought of them, which is always a good thing. The Room I stayed seemed rather small, one bed, 2bathrooms, one with a sink and a shower and the other had the toilet with not much walking space. The tv never worked but we were barely in the room anyway. The bed was nice and comfortable and looked clean. The staff was very courteous and friendly and we felt safe and well taken care of. If you are on a budget, plan to enjoy the nightlife and want to stay in the heart of Montreal by Ste Catherine I would definitely recommend this hotel. One of the employees told us they plan on doing some renovations to make the place look even better.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room, they tend to be noticeably bigger.

Thanks for your comments. The area is in full transition but there are still some remnants of the when this area was a redlight district. However, the area now houses all of the major theatres and festivals in Montreal and all the new construction makes this area one of the most exciting new areas of the city to discover. The area is very safe and we are very fortunate in having such a great location, being within walking distance of most of Montreal's tourist attractions. Our hotel has also undergone major renovations and are working on some of the common areas in the next few months. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the efforts of our staff.

We stayed there for three nights while going to the Osheaga festival this year. We were a little worried at first as it had a casual hostel feel in the lobby. However, they gave us the option to wait an extra half hour for a quiet room and boy did it exceed our expectations. The decor was great, it was super clean and all newly renovated. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home. I would not suggest it for those with any mobility issues are there are a lot of stairs to get around. Really, it seems perfect for young/middle-aged couples and those with older kids. Strollers and gear would be manageable, but a nuisance. For us though, it was perfect and we plan to go back there even when not there for a festival. It was nice to go to a smaller hotel that is not part of the chains. Also, if you are worried about it being above a sex shop, you have no need. It is not a sleazy one and the location of it being so close to theatres and galleries certainly makes up for it. I would totally recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: There are rooms that do not face the main street and are quieter.

Thanks for your great recommendation. Our hotel is particularily full during the summer time since we are in the core of the entertainment district.....and for those festivals not in the immediate area, we are close to the St, Laurent metro station. We have numerous guests that return every year that attend the Osheaga festival....we hope that you will be one of our return guests.

Spent 4 nights here and have nothing but good things to say. Hotel location is perfect, 1 min from St Laurent subway, easy walking up St. Catherine to shops & restaurants.
Room was new, nice, clean, with TV, window A/C unit that you can control, and modern, clean bathroom with separate toilet and shower room which was perfect. Hotel lobby and rooms look just like the photos so there were no surprises.
Lots of room for two people, bed was comfortable. Despite the busy location, the hotel was super quiet at night.
Yes, you have to walk up to the reception desk, and the hotel is located above a convenience store and a sex shop, but it's not seedy. As two girls, we were perfectly safe and comfortable walking around at night without any problems.
Did not have the continental breakfast so can't comment on that. Everyone staff member we met at reception was friendly and helpful as was the maid.
Overall, would definitely stay here again on my next visit. Feel like I have found a gem of a hotel!
