room - modern and minimalist, comfortable bed and furniture, sexy double shower. (stayed in 205, great layout)
location - bixi (bike rental) across street, one block from peel metro station, steps from st catherine
breakfast - espresso and delicious pastries (check photo), dedicated space for dining opening soon
service - beyond friendly and helpful
loved every second... we'd be back again.
it will be a little easier to find once the sign is up :)

Imagine showing up at the rental counter and being informed that the only vehicle available for you and your significant other is a 2-seat convertible. "Great!" you think. You've always wanted to drive a cool car, and won't this be better than the usual bland sedan?

Initially, you can't wipe the smile off your face. You love turning heads at stoplights. You love being 4 inches off the ground. You love being able to get around so nimbly. However, after a few days, the limitations of the car become apparent. It doesn't have much storage space. It doesn't offer much in the way of privacy, and boy do you hear a lot of road noise! However, you sure look cool. It's probably worth the trade-off. It's not like you'll have to drive this for the rest of the year.

Staying at the Hotel Chez Swann is a lot like this experience: small, cool, intimate, and noisy. Your first impression upon walking in (don't miss the door - it's very nondescript) is that you are in a very exclusive club. Colored lighting floods the entryway. Modern art decorates the "lobby." Old foreign movies are projected soundlessly on the wall opposite the most basic front desk you're apt to ever see - a huge piece of wood with two Mac Books, manned by a very young and very friendly bilingual staff.

Going up to your room, you feel like you're visiting the set of one of those design shows that play on the HGTV cable channel, with artful stenciling and light fixtures made from repurposed metal. Then you enter the room.

Like the sports car, it's small, but unquestionably cool. The bed takes up a lot of it. No closet here -the armoire is easily filled, so hopefully you packed light! There's a huge flatscreen mounted on what appears to be the window, but closer inspection reveals that it's a clever trick done with drapery. The TV is at an angle that is not exactly easy to watch, but that's OK. The real show here is the shower.

At least with room 203 (but judging from the fire escape map, most of the rooms appear to follow the same plan) the shower is in the very middle of the room. Yes, you enter it through the bathroom, but the glass wall opposite the shower door allows your significant other to lay in bed and watch you turn on and off one of four different-leveled shower heads. (If you're feeling shy, you can close the curtain, although, it's hardly opaque.) The sink is square and cool looking but is a design that would be horrible for longer than a hotel visit. The toilet is out of the line of sight through the shower, but it's not quite the most private arrangement ever. There's even a talking scale to notify you how much weight you're gaining as you eat at all the sumptuous restaurants in the area.

The air conditioner rapidly cooled down the room - very important in the humid Montreal summer. Other amenities included free wireless access, free long distance to the US and Canada, a safe, and bottled water. Weirdly, more basic hotel features such as a mini bar, or even a pen and pad of paper were absent. There is no room service - yet. I guess negotiations with a nearby restaurant are in the works. However, there is a fabulous 24 hour panini shop about a block away. Also, French pastries and a do-it-yourself espresso machine are placed in the lobby each morning.

The Hotel Chez Swann has a "pretty good" location. It shares the tudor-style building with Liquid Nutrition (home of the $5 fruit smoothie) and an upscale French restaurant Le Pois Penche (The Bent Pea??? - home of the $11 glass of beer) Other reviews complained about being able to hear the music from the businesses incessantly in certain rooms. I can't honestly say if that was a problem. The noise from the nightly concerts on nearby street carnival overpowered any closer sources.

Part of the building looks out onto a pay lot, aside from being ugly, means that a lot of people will be returning to their cars late at night, not always quietly. On the plus side, there is a Bixi bike rental station right across the street, and one of Montreal's fabulous dedicated bike lanes is just around the corner. Hotel Chez Swann is also in the proximity of several strip clubs. Unlike parts of the US, this didn't mean that it was in a seedy area. It's probably on the edge what would be considered the heart of the downtown. There are numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants within 2 blocks. Also, the airport bus stop (747 express) is a mere 3 blocks from the hotel.

If you don't mind trading off style for function, take the opportunity to stay in this very cool hotel. You're probably in fashion-conscious Montreal for reasons other than to get a good night's sleep.

Room Tip: Request a third-floor room. It's probably quieter than the second floor.

My husband & I stayed here for our 3 year anniversary for 3 nights. It is one of the cheaper hotels in MTL and in a prime location. We walked everywhere! From Rue Drummond where it is located Rue St. Catherine is literally 2 minutes away & Crescent Street with all the night life is one block down. We went to Bistro's on Boulevard de Maisonneuve. There are lovely little restaurants & places to eat all around it. The hotel's breakfast wasn't our thing every day as it's just pastries & tea/coffee, but we had it on our last day & the pastries were delicious. There is a small health bar in the front of the hotel which has some very nice healthy options for a snack or protein shake.

We had to travel a bit by cab to see Notre Dame & St. Joseph's but it was only maximum $10 each way. We saw everything Montreal had to offer including a walk down Rue Sherbrooke to Rue St-Paul (Vieux Montreal). We even went on a day trip to Quebec City.

I highly recommend this hotel! It was a great experience for a young couple & the decor is fresh & inspiring. If you like the traditional hotels like the Radisson or Hilton with your mother's curtains in each room, then this is not for you!

We have been going to Montreal for over five years, this was a special occasion our 40th anniversary. Great location, wonderful ,wonderful service, super room, very romantic, clean, cool decorations and fun!
We mentioned our aniversary and when we went back to our room there was a gift bag with fabulous chocolates and gift certificate to a spa, how wonderful is that.
The manager, the front desk, everyone was quick to help and give us ideas on our stay.
This is now our favorite hotel to go to anywhere .
Not cookie cutter and well thought out down to the last detail.

What a surprise! For the price, you can't beat the funky, modern accommodations of this fantastic little hotel in the center of Montreal.

The rooms are spacious and well-appointed: Great, comfortable bedding, a beautiful bathroom (double shower, great products, soft & fluffy towels). The design of this hotel is arty / funky, but not in a cheap-looking way. I was very impressed.

Check-in was simple (they use Apple computers at the front desk). Staff were friendly and English-speaking, the common areas are very nice. Location is fantastic - just a short walk to shopping or office towers in the center of Montreal. Felt secure/safe the entire time in the hotel.

Will definitely stay here again - my only gripes (but still 5 stars) - the wifi is a bit weak at times and the breakfast (coffee and danishes/croissants) is a bit minimal, but for the price I was not bothered by this at all (Second Cup is about 2 blocks away). STAY HERE!

This hotel is great! Would stay there again. It's unique and not like a chain hotel, is relatively new, and we hope that they make it.

We wanted to stay closer to old town, but this was better. Could still walk to old town but enjoyed being close to restaurants on Crescent. Pleasantly surprised by plush spa robe and slippers, free wi-fi, free calls to Canada and US, free continental breakfast.

Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, but not trained. There was no literature in the sleek room, and no one could tell us what the TV stations were, how to adjust the TV - picture was larger than the screen, how to retrieve messages on the room telephone when the readout said there was a message, etc. Very kind desk person brought us ice, but there is no vending or ice machine.

Hotel room 212: on the south side - 2 windows faced a skylit atrium, not outdoors, but completely private. We could hear footsteps above us, but nothing adjacent (if we had neighbors). Would ask for a 3rd floor room. Room doors slammed in the hall as guests came/left, but no housekeeping noise. Two beds, desk, wardrobe, chair. Spacious enough but very black and dark and a bit tricky to negotiate. Decor is minimal and trendy cool. Good a/c unit is very quiet. Lighting - OK for reading in bed but otherwise the room is very dim. For serious work, would need to request an additional lamp.

Inside the entry door, and from bathroom, are 3 steps down on a completely black floor that could be a falling hazard. Spotlights along the steps are too bright to leave on overnight, so we left the bathroom light on with the door closed to remind us that the stairs were there.

Two of us were non-romantic friends, so to obscure the peek-a-boo shower we pulled the red curtain but it was quite sheer, so we turned on the floor lamp in front of the window to obscure images from the shower. We didn't see any other rooms so don't know how this compares. All in all, a great experience!

Room Tip: Third floor so no footstep noise from above.

My Girlfriend and I headed to East Canada for Easter and Montreal was our first stop. We arrived from the UK at around 11am and although we weren’t expecting to be checked in we simply asked if we could leave our bags and go for a walk to waste a few hours before check-in. Of course deep down all we wanted to do was get checked in and freshen up but we knew we were too early for check-in. The man at reception told us that our room wasn’t, but was not only able to check us in but also upgraded us to suite which was available. What a great start to our holiday!

Once in the room, it certainly didn’t disappoint, very modern, very funky and very clean. We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel.
