Save the metro travelling for the evenings. It's too hot down there during the day anyway! The best way to soak up this really beautiful city is on a bike.
I rented the new Argon 18 road bike with 105 components for two days. It comes with a lock, helmet, saddle bag, puncture tools, two bidon holders, a bike fit, choice of pedals and a basic computer. They also provide a number for emergencies so if there's a mechanical or crash they will come out to you. Brilliant service.
The bike was set up for some of the slightly gravel and sand tracks and comfortably climbed and descended the Mont Royal, despite my wincing as I first hit the gravel.
The bike is king on Montreal roads in my brief experience and even if you take one of the lower end bikes it is a must do. The routes are quite easy to follow.
Couple of tips; get a map from Ca Roule or a Bixi bike stop and you can also check out where you are on the bike maps beside every Bixi stop. During the summer the Montreal Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit is open for bikes to use when it is not being used for motor racing. This is immense fun so definitely add it to your route plan.
