“Nice life in Le Plateau”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2012

The Plateau area of Montreal, close and convenient to downtown, provides an eclectic alternative to downtown. This seasonal (spring and summer) B&B is a friendly and homey place in a quiet neighborhood but very close to Avenue Mont-Royal and its many restaurants, bars and shops. The three rooms are large and comfortable with ensuite bathrooms, something of an exception for B&Bs. Ken, the host, is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. A great way to experience life in a diverse and happening area of Montreal.

My husband and I are frequent visitors to Montreal from the U.S., going back several decades. We have visited during the Jazz Festival many times, and have explored different parts of the city at other times. We've stayed in an assortment of different hotels, ranging from 4 star Hiltons to boutique and independent operations. On this last visit, over Labor Day weekend 2012, we found that the usual hotels were booked and branched out. We were delighted to be guests of Ken Ilasz at his charming Mont-Royal B&B instead, and found a whole new perspective on the city. Ken is a wonderful host and a friendly guide. Ken is a professional baker (his unique fruitcakes are sold all over the world) and his breakfasts are creative, generous, made with top-quality ingredients and kept us full until the afternoon. His coffee is also exceptional. We loved getting to know Montreal in a different way, from a different neighborhood, from an insider, rather than a hotel concierge. The room was very comfortable and homey -- not like an anonymous hotel, but like staying with a friend. Ken was extremely accommodating and stored our bicycles inside (he's right on the bike path, so it was very convenient to pop out the door and hit the trail). If you're looking for a personal touch and an insider's track on this magical city, check out Ken's hospitality at Boulanger Bassin.

We had a lovely time at Boulanger Bassin and in Montreal. Breakfasts were wonderful and plentiful, and Ken, the host, provided many "off the beaten path" suggestions for places to see and eat and ways to get around the city. We ended up seeing much more than we would have if we'd relied on the guidebooks. Breakfast conversations, too, were stimulating. The small number of guests allows for lively conversation, as well as menu variation (even for us vegetarians). The location is terrific, too, in that it's quiet, yet within easy walking distances of many attractions. I'd stay here again in a heartbeat. (Got any rooms, Ken?)

Having put off our travel plans for a variety of reasons, we decided to go to Montreal and Quebec at the last minute and lucked into this small (3 rooms) B&B in the heart of Montreal. Ken, our host, could not have been kinder or more helpful during our three-day stay. He oriented us to the city immediately (helped us to park nearby) and made suggestions for dining that evening. The Bassin is within walking distance of literally dozens of good restaurants, two or three main shopping districts, one block from Parc La Fontaine, and sits directly on the marvelous bike path that enables cyclists to traverse the city easily and comfortably. Should you choose to use public transportation, the Metro stop is a block or so away. The breakfasts Ken prepares are a pleasure to behold and partake of. He is bilingual and having served all, sits down to chat each morning and make his guests feel further at home. All in all, he made it a wonderful introduction to Canada and the friendliness of Canadiens.

What can I say about this place but amazing! Ken is a great host and will make you feel at home. I haven't been to Montreal in a long time and my girlfriend has never been but after walking in the door it was like we were visiting an old friend. It's not a "drop your bags and your on your own" kind of a place. Ken gives you a moment to settle in and then pulls out maps and brochures to point you in the right direction of your interest. One of the best memories of our stay is, after dinner and some wandering around we came back to some great conversation. We were tired and ready to turn in but there was Ken asking about our excursion. We talked for a good long while and then we grabbed some chairs and sat outside for more. And as for the breakfast...it did NOT disappoint. He asked us what we would like and what time we were getting up. Everything was prepped to cook so when it came time our food was fresh off the stove and hot. I highly recommend Boulanger and Ken.

My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights in May. Ken was an attentive, engaging and thoughtful host, and the breakfasts were delightful. The location is great, the price is reasonable, and the room we stayed in was very comfortable. All in all, a very pleasant experience.

We stayed at the Bassin from May 25 until 28 together with my parents. The area Plateau is great, with the park around the corner and shops and restaurant on walking distance. We rented the bixi bikes and discovered Montreal while biking, loved it!
We had two rooms which were big and had a great bed! Both had their own bathroom and toilet. The breakfast Ken makes is wonderful and kicks of your day with energy! He helps you have a great time and enlightens you with tips to do and see. We sat outside his house two evenings while enjoying a beer, really felt special!

We had a wonderful time!
