We hadn't had a chance to just enjoy being tourists in Old Montreal for a long time, so we made the most of an offer to spend a couple of nights at the Auberge de la Place Royale this week-end. The location really couldn't be beat for walking everywhere... as it is literally half-a-block from the Place Royale, almost directly across the street from the Quai Alexandria of the Old Port.
Our room (#204) was large, with three big windows facing the back laneway. The queen bed was very comfortable, with nice bedsheets and a duvet. We had a small breakfast table, mini-fridge, toaster oven and coffee maker in our room. Our ensuite was huge. Croissants, fruit, peanut butter, honey, jam, milk and sugar were provided, and this light fare was sufficient for our breakfast needs. We really appreciated the cleanliness and "homey" feeling that we had in our room.
Although there is no staff in the evening, and the hotel was full on both nights that we were there, we really didn't get the sense that this was a problem at all. You can hear a bit of noise from the other rooms, but the place was very quiet overall. There was early morning noise in the laneway, but that was to be expected.
We had received an e-mail before our arrival, explaining the entry code system, so we were made aware ahead of time of the limited presence at reception. This was fine by us.
We spent a relaxing 3 hours in the floating spa Bota Bota the first morning, had a great long lunch at Osteria Venti on rue Saint-Paul, followed by a visit of the Beatles exhibit and archeological dig of the Pointe-a-Calliere Museum. We even stumbled onto the filming of one of the "Just for Laughs" street gags, just around the corner!
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and would come back again, especially at this time of the year (before Old Montreal gets really crazy-summer-busy!)
