“Great Value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2014

My girlfriend and I went to Montreal on short notice because we felt we needed a trip; because of this we were trying to keep speding to a minimum. We stayed at Hotel l'Abri du Voyageur
that had a queen bed with private washroom as we did not want to use a shared washroom.

All I can say is...great value!! It was clean, beautiful and to be honest, unique. It's not like your typical white walled hotel room and that's why we liked it. The service was exceptional from everyone at the hotel and although we spoke very little french, the help was very kind. I definitely recommend this hotel.

Note: We made many friends in Montreal who proceeded to tell us that the hotel and area we were staying in was "a disgusting & run down area". We COMPLETELY disagree with them, as we are from Vancouver and we're used to seeing East Hastings (look it up). The Just for Laughs Festival was right outside our door as well as many restaurants.

Room Tip: If you don't mind spending the extra money, we definitely suggest a room with a private washroom...

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay in our establishment for Tripadvisor clients.. I am pleased that you had a great stay and that you appreciated our unique budget boutique personality. Many locals remember this area as the red light district; however, in recent years it has emerged as Montreal's trendy entertainment district, the Quartier des Spectacles. This vibrant sector now houses over 30 entertainment venues and is home to most of Montreal's major festivals....we are indeed in the heart of the action. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next trip to Montreal. Remember that we have special discounted rates for return guests. Till next time.

We stayed last month for 2 nights, myself and my teenaged daughter. Hotel l'abri du Voyageur has something for everyone. We happened to choose the budget accommodations with the shared bath in the hall right outside our door. The room was fine, had a sink and two beds, a TV, and was spotlessly clean. Even though the hotel was booked solid, there was never a wait for the bathroom. The place has a lot of character and is adorned with original artwork. (We were happy for the paintings that found a home here: the strange, the avant garde...some genuinely creepy, others hilarious.) You know right away you are not in a Comfort Inn. And step out the door, and you are in the heart of Montreal: the Latin Quarter, Quartier Spectacles (Entertainment district,) Chinatown, Old Montreal.... Do take them up on their offer of earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Have a wonderful time and enjoy this vibrant, friendly city!

Your warm comments regarding our property are greatly appreciated. I am also pleased that you appreciated all of the original artwork in our hotel. Several years ago, the third floor of our hotel was a large studio for local artists (some who have since become very well known) and we are very proud to have these works on display. We look forward to welcoming you on your next visit.......there is always something to do and discover in Montreal's entertainment district, the Quartier des Spectacles.

Others have commented on the great location and fine ambience of this hostelry. I want to comment on service, which is superb. Laurier especially showed such kindness. Maybe it's just a good feeling to know when you're being well taken care of. I highly recommend this establishment!

Having a night stay there when travelling Montreal. The location is very good that you can go any attrations easily. Near Chinatown, Place des Arts, shopping malls and streets. But as it's located on a busy street there are a bit noisy and not too good if you are not a deep sleeper. The cleaningness of shared bathroom is statisfactory. We don't expect there are much facilities for the price we pay. There are only disposable plastic cups provided in the rooms. Hairdryer and kettle can be borrowed from the reception. Staffs are friendly and helpful.

...and the stuff they were selling in that sex shop catered to primitive sexual appetites as the category of inflatable ladies & portable plastic girl parts. I thought it was very crass. The adjoining part of the sex shop had lingerie but also a more uptight attitude-I was requested to give them my tote which I would not do so I left. Nobody travels without a tote bag these days and only a fool relinquishes it to a stranger. The Motel was OK-the staff was friendly and it is close to attractions like Chinatown. I found the nose at night in this Motel that sits beside a small red light district to be beyond belief. A section of St-Catherine in front of it was closed for a music festival but that didn't stop some crazy teens from skateboarding loudly in the area of the place at 4am. Its also hard to get a cab if thee is no road access also. I left before my two nights were up partly due to a strange smell that seemed to have mysteriously accumulated in my room overnight that I couldn't identify and partly because the bit with the sex shop beneath it turned me off. The fact that the rooms do look nice doesn't necessary make it a good place to stay. I give it a bare pass.

Our budget boutique hotel is located in the heart of Montreal's trendy dynamic entertainment district, the Quartier des Spectaces. This area houses over 35 entertainment venues and most of Montreal's major festivals, hence the closure of the famous Ste-Catherine Street during the summer months. In downtown Montreal, there are several businesses of a sexual nature (we do not choose our neighbors) but the area remains very safe day or night.
Being recognized as a green establishment, we use all natural cleaning products and therefore I am unsure of the smell that you are referring to (but any concerns of this nature should be brought to the immediate attention of our very attentive cleaning staff). We pride ourselves of being meticulously clean and have received many awards in this area.
We realize that there can be noise if you have a room facing the street but they are often requested since people often choose our hotel to be in the heart of the action; however, if you are a light sleeper, one can always request a room not facing the pedestrian walkway. We are pleased that you enjoyed the aesthetics of your room and hope that you will return in order that we can redeem ourselves in your eyes, better meet your needs and offer you the customer service that we are proud of and recognized for by our guests. We value your comments; they help us to continue to improve and to maintain the very high ratings we receive from our guests.

I stayed only one night for a conference, but the rooms are beautiful and clean (newly renovated!), the concierge was extremely accommodating in getting me a room close to my colleagues, and the location was very convenient to downtown sights.
