Hotel l'Abri du Voyageur
Ranked #86 of 165 Hotels in Montreal
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We booked a 3 day, 2 nights stay for a quick getaway. Glad we found an extremely clean hotel at an affordable price located in downtown Montreal and close access to the metro. Daily housekeeping and clean towels and amenities refilled. Staff was very friendly and helpful in guiding us with attractions and parking directions. There is currently an ongoing festival held until end of Aug at night time located right down the block of the hotel. Attractions include live concerts, comedy sketch, local vendors- beer, treats, food trucks, etc. Or if you prefer- place des arts is right across the street that goes into the Centre Eaton mall. Bags are subject to search at the entrance of the festival. A lot of reviews have noted a sex shop right next door. No worries though, it's not a seedy or sketchy area at all. It's just an adult novelty store but in good taste. A lot of enforcement patrol including security officers are always present across the street and within the proximity of the hotel. Most likely b/c of the festival but the area is safe. My only tip is if you are staying here, be warned that if you are checking in the bottom (lobby) floor can get noisy in the morning. The walls are pretty thin so you can definitely hear conversations and noises. Ask the reception for secure/indoor parking areas. Do not park your car in outdoor garage!! There's been a car theft ring in Montreal where many cars were reported stolen/missing. Park your car in an indoor garage where it is monitored by security cameras/attendants. It is better to be safe than sorry! Metro is located right down the block from the festival. Also, the old Montreal is a walking distance that goes into St. Urban- Chinatown/Little Italy which is literally a 10-15 min walk from the hotel. Thank you Hotel l'Abri du Voyageur for the lovely stay. We'll definitely return again when visiting Montreal!!

Room Tip: Avoid the lobby/bottom floor if possible- tends to get noisy in the morning when guests check in/out...

We are pleased that you had a great stay at our hotel and that our central location permitted you to discover our beautiful city and participate in one of the festivals of our dynamic sector. The housekeeping staff pride themselves in providing meticulously clean rooms and great service. I will be glad to share your kind comments with them, as well as with our reception staff for helping to make your stay a memorable one. There are numerous underground parking lots with attendants within proximity of our hotel and the receptionist can provide you with options during check-in.

We liked it. Our room had pretty wood floors and a neat brick wall. The bathroom was pretty and clean with a neat corner shower. The location couldn't be more perfect it's in the middle of the city you can walk to anything. There is not parking on sight but it's in easy walking distance. The bed was good. The one thing I would point out is there are a lot of stairs, if you have any problem with stairs this is probably not the place for you. There's no elevator.

I'd also like to comment on some other reviews that made it sound like this was some kind of brothel because of the adult toy store next door. It's a completely separate store. I never saw anything that made it appear that anything inappropriate was going on in connection with the hotel.

Glad you liked it. We recently renovated many areas of our hotel, in keeping with its historical character ( wood flooring, brick walls, high ceilings). Our hotel leases the top three floors of this centennial building (hence the fact there is not an elevator) and as you mentioned, we have no connection with any of the businesses located on the main floor. It appears that you took full advantage of our prime location to discover all that Montreal has to offer. We look forward to your next visit.

The hotel is a bit hidden - reception is up a narrow staircase from a small door next to an "erotic shop". This is not the most promising entrance, but the lobby is bright and clean, the staff are friendly and the room I booked was just what I needed.

I had one of the larger rooms with a small kitchen in the corner with a full-size cooker, microwave, coffee maker and assorted pans, plates and cutlery. The table and chairs were a bit wobbly, but the bed and easy chair were good - at least I slept well every night. WiFi is free and while it was intermittent in my room it worked well in the lobby. The cheapest rooms share bathrooms and could be an option if budgets are very limited.

I used the kitchen to make my own breakfast, but other rooms often come with vouchers for a coffee shop across the street.

The location on St Catherine is good - plenty of shops and cultural venues to the west. Heading east there are quite a few sex shops, but the area does not feel intimidating or even particularly seedy.

Room Tip: Sometimes there are concerts in the square to the southwest of the hotel. Rooms facing northeast may...

I stay in this hotel every time I go to Montreal. I have stayed here at all times of the year and have never had any problems with the hotel or the neighborhood. Although it is at the edge of the "red light district" and there are sex shops nearby, but despite this it does not have a sleazy or unsafe feel at all.

The rooms are simple and small, but comfortable, and clean, and I've never had a problem with any of the amenities. The rooms don't have individual bathrooms, there are shared bathrooms in the hall. However, they were always clean and I never had an issue with having to wait for other guests in order to use it. I've never had a problem with parking either, and its near downtown. All in all just a great deal.

Thank you for your continued loyalty. We are happy that you make our hotel your home away from home when in Montreal. We aim to offer the best accommodation and service at the lowest possible price. Our budget rooms with shared washrooms remain a great value but we also have other options such as studio apartments and superior rooms for those who want more comfort and amneties. See you next time.

We were there for three nights over the 4th of July weekend.
Our trip was focused on being at the Montreal Jazz Festival and on catching a number of concerts. If you go there to Montreal for the Jazz Fest, there could not be a better location. It is directly in the center of everything going on, both the major venues, and the public free- stages.

The staff were all wonderfully nice and helpful. We had all our questions answered knowledgeably and creatively. The main person on during the daytime was particularly helpful and seemed entirely enthusiastic about her job and her beautiful city-- she seemed very concerned (though not at all pushy) that we make the most of our experience in Montreal.

We loved our room. We were placed right next to the front desk. The room that had wonderful wooded shuttered windows and had a little "rough-around-the-edges" loft feel, which I find aesthetically pleasing. And though we were facing the main drag, we weren't bothered by noise... but that might be a concern during a time of year when the AC isn't humming through the night, as it was on this particularly hot weekend, keeping the room absolutely comfortable.

Yes, we did have to share a bathroom, but it was keep meticulously clean. SO no real problem there. The sink in our room mitigated that a bit. But this is a hotel for travelers, not tourists, or people who need a lot of luxury. I'll take the friendly international crowd vibe, and the saving of a couple of hundred dollars a night, over the vibe of a "nicer" place.

Finally, as indicated above, the price simply cannot be beat.

So: I highly recommend!

We liked it so much, in fact, we immediately booked the Fourth of July weekend for next year ... which brings me to my one caveat-- if we hadn't immediately booked, it seems we would have been offered 10% off our next stay, according to the email we received since coming home, but I am sure management will adjust our next reservation to reflect that discount.

We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you will be coming back next year. We love to see our clients return time and time again and of course, we always provide a discount for return clients when they book directly with our hotel. We are pleased that you appreciated the rustic feel of your budget room and the value of these accommodations. Though our standard and superior rooms have many more amenities and comfort, we took great care to renovate them in keeping with the buildings' historical character ( maple wood floors, bare brick walls etc.) Looking forward to seeing you again next June.

I booked this hotel due to the cheap rates which were especially cheap when I paid up front. I later read about the location being next to a sex shop and wondered whether I'd made a good choice. As it turned out, I needn't have worried. Whilst I wouldn't normally choose to stay next to 'Erotika Boutique' (and the friends we met up with had a laugh about this) the hotel itself presents as very respectable inside and the location was perfect for the jazz festival (the main stage was a two minute walk away). It is only a short walk to the old town too. Our room (a double with shared bathroom) turned out to be just as the pictures portrayed it. It was clean and airy with a sink and a noisy but effective air conditioning unit. We never queued for showers and found the shared bathrooms, which are equipped with modern white suites, to be spotlessly clean. We chose not to get breakfast included in the deal and there are several cafes within two minutes walk of the hotel. The staff were friendly and gave us some good recommendations regarding what to see in Montreal in a day. Check in and out was quick and easy and the only negative was having to carry our luggage up the stairs. We found parking for $20 per day at a parking lot one block south of the hotel but you can pull up closer to the hotel on boulevard st Laurent to unload first. We would happily stay here again if we return to Montreal and we would recommend to anyone travelling n a budget unless you have children with you.

Room Tip: On the advice of other travellers I requested a quiet room at the back and wasn't disappointed.
