“Spacious, clean and comfortable budget accomodation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2012

This little hotel was a pleasant surprise for my friend and I after 10 days changing accomodation across Canada.

It was the one we liked the most: great value for money, one of the cheapest we stayed in being also very clean, well kept and spacious.
Big bedrooms with high ceilings, new furniture and fittings, nice decoration...
The staff is very nice, honest and helpful. Since there is no elevator and we were carrying heavy luggage, the lady at reception offered to change our room in the 3rd floor for one close to reception and then refunded $10 because that one was cheaper. A big thank you for her!!

Location is great. 10-15min away walking to the Old Port, the train station, downtown and the latin quarter. It is true that it is located next door to a sex shop but don't let that fool you. The neighbourhood that may have been low profile in the past is being renovated and accomodation there is budget and good quality.

Many clients comment that we have the best value. We try hard to keep high standards while keeping our prices as low as possible. Being that the hotel begins on the second floor and that it is located in a centennial building, it does have lots of character but there are many stairs to contend with. If stairs are an issue, do not hesitate to ask if there is anything on a lower level and we will certainly try to accomodate. Next time you make another Canadian trek, we hope hope that you will join us once again.

Certainly would stay there again. The price for a down town Montreal hotel was amazing. Definitely felt more like a hostel rather than a hotel-- the rooms were private but the showers and toilets were shared. For me and my friends this was completely acceptable but may not be for couples. Service was so helpful-- arranged my 4am cab to the airport. The free breakfast was also very good.

Great value for the money. Room was clean, large and well furnished. Carol was very helpful with dining suggestions and directions to attractions. Close to mall which has an IGA and other stores for anything you forgot. Easy walk to old town sites.

Great place. Super friendly staff. Awesome location. Price was really good too! I might not make this a romantic get away place but it is awesome for a casual tourist trip or stay with friends or somewhere just to crash. Kinda feels like a hostel! In a good way. Nice!

This is a small hotel that is very pleasant if you are into quirky “European style” accommodations. It is in a neighborhood can be most charitably described as "transitional". It is transitioning from a sort of “B” grade red-light district into a city government-endorsed festival venue. The façade of the sex shop adjacent to the entrance is really quite tastefully done and the ‘massage” parlors are a few blocks away now. The location is actually quite good – near the St. Laurent metro station and about five (long) blocks from the “hot” harbor-front area.

The staff is extraordinarily helpful and friendly – especially the e English-speaking one who greeted us @ the front desk. He provided a very good restaurant recommendation and was quite willing to accept our comments about a place we went for lunch in a spontaneous adventure.

Downsides? No elevator (the staff was more than willing to carry our bags to a 3rd floor) & a lack of an ice-maker (for those of us who are profligate US-types). A new A/C unit was intensely noisy and the front-desk person (who struggled valiantly with my over-technical English) offered us another room because the maintenance staff is not on duty on Saturdays.

Upsides? Price, location, staff and a decidedly NOT Holiday Inn environment.

N.B. - DO NOT use the address with a GPS. In the summer many of the streets that approach the hotel are closed for the aforementioned festivals, The parking/unloading area is actually on St. Laurent where it crosses St Catherine.

Parking is off-site (as is the very nice breakfast provided by a local restaurant). Prices for parking are OK for a major metropolitan area.

The hotel is conveniently located to much of Montreal's nightlife and restaurants, and a short walk to public transportation, though it IS in a mildly dodgy part of town and located over an "adult" shop. But given the foot traffic outside the hotel at all hours, I never felt like the area was unsafe. The staff are excellent and incredibly helpful and friendly. I booked my reservation online just a few hours before arriving and had absolutely no problems. And for the price, the value is fantastic. My room was basic but comfortable, and the room included a sink; showers and toilets were in a shared bathroom in the hallway. Clientele that I came across included single travelers, couples and families - pretty much people looking for a good deal. Hotel l'Abri du Voyageur has certainly earned its high ratings on TripAdvisor.

We appreciate your great recommendation and love when we have met the needs of our guests. Thanks to you and all of the tripadvisor clients for taking the time to rate and comment on our establishment. Though our aim is to offer the best value year round, during the winter season, we have even lower rates. At any time of year, there is always something to do in Montreal. Till next time.

We spent 2 nights in a shared bathroom room. The location of the hotel is good, it is in the downtown, a lot of sights is in walking distance. The staff was very nice and helpful. When we arrived he gave advices to us about the city, the sights.

The room was very small (bit bigger than the bed in the room), but for the price I think it is good. Only disadvantage, that there is no elevator, and there are lot of steps, it was no problem for us, but maybe it could be for somebody.

Altogether it is a good hotel, with very good location and helpful staff, and great value for money.
