HI Montreal Hostel
Reviewed June 16, 2011

We stayed here for 2 nights in two different rooms.

All of our interactions with the staff were very pleasant, and they were really good in offering activities and directions etc. The hostel is in a pretty good location, a short walk to a metro station, and a short walk to the down town area. And it is airconditioned throughout! YAY!

The place is pretty big, I am unsure of how many beds they have,

There is a large kitchen with around 8, 2 burner cookers, heaps of plates, pots pans etc and a large island bench for prep. Could probably use a couple of chopping boards as I noticed there was not much of this. The kitchen has a large wall of boxed cupboard spaces to keep food and a couple of fridges too. When we cooked, we cooked early which appeared a good option as when we were finished the kitchen was packed!

There is a large dining area with heaps of tables, a bar, pool table and large t.v's. They serve food from the bar (nothing special, but pretty cheap) as well as doing a few breakfast options.

We used the laundry facility, 2 washing machines, 2 driers (1 was out of order) We had a hard time getting our stuff in the dryer as it was busy. There is a room full of computers and the place has free wi-fi throughout (it was a little slow to be honest)

The first room was a 4 bed dorm (we booked as a private) 2 sets of bunks, sheets and blankets are provided and it is a no sleeping bag environment, with vinyl coverings on the mattresses (I guess this ensures a bed bug free hostel) There was an ensuite with a shower, toilet and sink. No towels or floor mats were provided. This room was really clean, as was the bathroom. It was a quiet room, other than the squeeky bunk beds!

The second room was a private room with a double bed and ensuite bathroom. Quite small, but functional with a small desk. It also had a small LCD t'v mounted on the wall which was a nice bonus. The bathroom had a sink, toilet and shower and included towels. The bed was comfortable and also had the lovely vinyl coverings on the mattress. The room was really clean as was the bathroom and had the bonus of the bed being made when we got to the room. It was also very quiet.

This place is a decent size and would be good for travelling and meeting people. The group activities seem fun and the location is good. I liked how clean the place was and it had a nice feeling. It is a very expensive hostel though.

there were some screwups with my booking as i had initially booked a 10 bed dorm but cancelled that booking and booked a 6 bed dorm and 4 bed dorm separately for our group of 10. i had received the confirmation emails for the 6 bed and 4 bed dorms and the cancellation email for the 10 bed dorm. however, when we arrived at the hostel, the booking system showed that my booking was for the 10 bed dorm. they did not have 6 bed and 4 bed dorm available at that time so we had to make do with the 10 bed dorm. imagine my annoyance when i arrived at 9am after an overnight 6 hours bus ride. the saving grace was that they offered everybody the member rate although only two of us were members. i think travellers should email or call them a day in advance to make sure their bookings are right

the location is good. it is near a metro station which brings you to just about any place in montreal. however, there is nothing much around the area itself. rooms are clean and there was enough space for everybody. the ensuite toilet is big for a hostel and there are a few other shared toilets which were always available.

its not bad but nothing to rave about either

I wanted to introduce my daughter to Hostel International and this was a great venue to do so. We really enjoyed the activities they had scheduled such as the walking tour & the Mount Royal drumming. The staff made the difference between just a room & an experience. We stayed for about 10 nights. While there was some confusion with bed assignments, it was quickly sorted for us. The self catering area was an excellent way to help stretch your travel budget. I would recommend the hostel to anyone who is travelling to Montreal

My friend and I stayed here for five nights. Our room had two single beds, bathroom, TV, and radio. It's your typical hostel with friendly staff, things to do every night, bar open till midnight (I think), laundry room to use for small fee, and free wifi. Staff at the front desk can get you tickets to ice hockey games if you're interested. The stadium is about 5 minute walk away.

We didn't get up to much as it was snowing but it's really close to the Underground City. Definitely a place to go if you want to get out of the cold.

DO NOT buy food from the Dominos that you can see from the front of the hostel. Service there is appalling and the food doesn't taste great. Go to the Underground City and find the bakery and deli instead. Or walk about a block and you will find Mc Donalds, Starbucks, and heaps of places you can eat at.

my friend and I got a 4 person room but no one filled the other two beds. If there had been 4 people in the room it wouldve been quite crowded. We had a private bathroom. Everything was clean, no frills. Nice kitchen and bar/seating area in the basement for making meals. Friendly staff.

We arrived at the montreal airport and stayed there for three nights. The connection to the airport was quite good, we took the 747 Express bus which stops three minutes from the hostel.

We had a private room with an ensuite bathroom. The room was OK and clean, but there was no window you could open and the shower was quite small.

In the beginning we had problems to access the free WiFi, but the staff were very friendly and fixed it in a short time.

Most of the time we visited the city, so we didn't used many of the hostels' facilities. The kitchen is very clean and well equipped.

Hey Monomas! Thanks for your nice review! We do know about the smallness of some of our rooms and bathrooms. Unfortunately, there's nothing much we can do about it (unless we decide some day to tear down some walls!). I guess we try to compensate with having a friendly and helpful staff!

Safe travels and hope to meet you next time!
