“Sans Soucy is "Sans" Problems”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2008

I'd never been to Montreal before and had been looking forward to visiting the city for some time. I wanted a comfortable B&B experience in the old part of town, in an authentic old stone building. The Sans Soucy proved to be parfait, without problems, and a charming choice. The staff are all friendly and personable. Martin (at the front desk), in particular, is wonderful. Always with a warm smile and a kind word. The owner (or one of the owners), Daniel, cooks up a mean array of omelettes with fresh ingredients each morning. Tomato basil, spinach and feta, salmon and ... , ham and ... , the list goes on (and on). Not much of a meat-eater, I loved the tomato basil and spinach feta omlettes. Magnifique. With fresh (and hot!) croissants, orange juice, and fresh fruit, I left each morning to explore the city on a full and happy stomach. I liked that you could see each room on the site and I chose 201, based on its pictures and description. It was spacious and had a lovely view of the street below. I've now fond memories from my two sets of lace-shuttered windows, opening out onto the Sans Soucy's corner of Vieux Montreal ... of the sunny afternoon and evening when I arrived, mist the following day, rain the next, and snow the last. Set against the characteristic old buildings and small street ... just lovely. Private bath and shower with tub (and jacuzzi jets!), lots of closet and chest of drawers space, cable TV, two comfortable arm chairs to sit and read, writing desk, lots of lamps, three heaters, hardwood floor, and authentic stone walls. Great room. Great place to call home in Montreal. Located within walking distance of many sights, restaurants, bars, cafes. Market right next door stays open until 11PM. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

  • Liked — Location and the warmth of the staff.
  • Disliked — I honestly can't think of a negative to site here. Not even a slight one.

Wonderfully welcoming, extremely comfortable. Very helpful staff, excellent breakfasts with interesting fellow travellers at table. Terrific location in Montreal, in the heart of history, fine restaurants, bistros, quaint boutiques.

We booked a two night stay last minute at this old Inn, and we can't wait to go back this winter! It was a beautiful place, and the owners and staff were very helpful. We stayed in two different rooms - both lovely. The made-to-order omelettes were excellent, and the homemade croissants were fabulous! The location can't be beat.

  • Liked — the beautiful rooms and the breakfast!
  • Disliked — having to leave!

Rooms very comfortable, very clean, good breakfast, staff accomodating, location in old Montreal very good for walking the waterfront, steps from History Museum, and within walking distance to Place des Arts for symphony, theatre, and art museum. Two great restaurants nearby: Restaurant Bonaparte ( directly behind Sans Soucy) and Club Chasee et Peche were both especially memorable.

This is a fabulous small hotel on the most convenient and interesting street in Vieux Montreal. The breakfast, which is included, was wonderful, served by the owner, Daniel Soucy. The hotel staff was so helpful in giving directions and recommendations on good restaurants.

  • Liked — The location, staff and great breakfast
  • Disliked — The rooms are fairly small.

Stayed here for 5 nights in mid September with my college roommate...both celebrating birthdays....we're of a certain age. Because we needed the only room with 2 beds I'd booked this months in advance, based on reading about the Auberge in "1001 places to see before you die". The room was very pleasant, well appointed. Overlooked the Rue St. Paul, which I was somewhat concerned about because of potential street noise, but that turned out to be not a problem. Breakfasts were very good. Advice on where to go and what to see, generally very helpful. The Polish restaurant across the street was a wonderful find....their food was gourmet and gave us a break from the more typical fare found everywhere else. Walking distance to most sights, and simply well located for the evening stroll. I would recommend NOT taking the greyhound bus tour, worst city tour I've taken anywhere ever! Expect an intimate Inn, centrally located, but with the limitations smaller facilities have ...nonetheless, I would stay love to here again were I ever to be back in Montreal.

My wife and I stayed in the suite at Auberge Les Passants du San Soucy in early September 2007. The inn is located in the heart of Old Montreal and gets high marks for being close to fine restaurants and tourist attractions. The staff also get high marks for their knowledge and helpfulness. The suite itself was disappointing. It was sparsely furnitured and the decorations were quite cold. You can't open the blinds as the suite is on the ground floor and you'll put on a peep show through the street level windows. Hence, the suite is either dark or in full public view. The food at the inn was fine. It was neither special nor bad. A better meal could be had at the local patisserie (pastry shop) located two blocks west.

Stay at the Auberge if you want a location inside Old Montreal, but skip the suite and save $60 by booking one of the smaller rooms with windows and blinds you can open.
