I had been to Montreal once in Summer and remembered the quays as a nice place, it's even better in winter with outdoor ice skating !

“Winter Magic at the Old Port of Montreal.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2014

As a licensed guide in Montreal, I am at the Old Port at least three times a day from April to November, working.
Very little is mentioned about the winter activities... well in the winter I am not working, I become a child in a play ground at the Old Port.

What many do not know...
When you cross the street and walk over those railway tracks from de la Commune street in OLD Montreal... you are at the
Old Port which is Federal property ( Canadian Government)
Which is why everything is in English and French and why there are Canadian flags everywhere and why many of the activities cost money.
So yes the Old Port is different from Old Montreal.....

Skating: at the Bonsecour Bassin:
I love skating, grew up skating. I can remember when we could skate the whole Bonsecour Bassin in the Old Port but... winters aren't cold enough in Montreal any more. Thus there is an artificially refrigerated rink. That is the only thing artificial ...
There are skate rentals, lockers, with rubber floors for those who maybe afraid to walk to the rink on ice.
I took my friend who, I have been teaching to skate.
Last Saturday January 18th .. the weather in Montreal was beyond gorgeous. Sunny warm ... so warm you did not need coats, mitts or hats to skate...

The music is fantastic. Every day from classic, to world music....to ballroom
The view is magical: Historical Old Montreal morning, afternoon, sunset or at night when the city is lit up..
Every two hour the rink is refreshed. There are refs there to make sure every one is safe. If you fall they will be there in 10 seconds to help you up.
Lots of places for you to sit around the sink, if you want to rest.
Great place for beginners
Everyone is smiling and encouraging those who are learning
Nothing but smiles and laughter....
A nice mixed crowds of ever age, back ground and sex.
You can get a seasons pass
There is a Van Houtte for good Montreal Coffee to warm up
After you skate... you are right in Old Montreal with no shortage of places to eat and rest up for more fun.

Urban Ice Fishing in the Old Port near the clock tower...
Just too much fun.
If you go skating your will get a two for one pass to go ice fishing
It will take four hours. You can fish outside, in a temporary Cabane or a wooden one
You can get your fishing permit, bait, équipement ... best part.... if you catch any fish.. you get to keep it and eat it... and its safe....

Igloo Fest
In the evening in January and February there is Igloo Fest...
Where else can you go out clubbing and not have to worry if you are looking pretty.. you just need to be warm and dance to electronic music.

If these activities do not entice you...
You have the Science Centre with an Imax theatre and a little further away... Bota Bota the floating spa in the Old Port...

In December every Saturday there are fireworks and lots of other activities

How do you dress for these winter activities:
Dress ugly and warm in layers remember you are near the river so it maybe colder, more humid and sometimes windy

Do that and like me you will be like a kid in a candy store enjoying the activities.....

“Spectacular Cruise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 18, 2014

Had the chance to go for a cruise off of the Vieux Port- Montreal. I was treated with the most incredible views and the water was beautiful. A great place to come at nighttime too for a chance to look at the lights :)

Definitely worth a visit!

“New Year's Eve was fun (but cold)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

Temperatures may have been hovering around 0 F, but this is a great place to bring in New Year's. Nowhere near as commercial as NYC or most other large cities, but ice skating, a big countdown clock and amazing fireworks were excellent.

Got there about 11:35, stayed thru the fireworks and then made it back to Hampstead by 1:15 AM. Beat that, New York!

“Over rated”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

We went for a walk down the old port quays and frankly it was so busy and loud I didn't enjoy it at all - maybe it was quite it would have been different.
