“Stuck up”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

If you do not speak French expect to be treated 2nd class
Starting at check in with the rude desk clerk that put French speakers ahead and tossed key down and waved us away.
Rooms with torn wall paper dirty and torn carpet, missing ice machines.. etc
While waiting in the lobby to go out one morning I asked at the help desk for coffee and was rather rudely informed that a Starbucks was across the street.
Nice location, but Montreal has better for less.
I have stayed in nicer 2 stars certainly friendlier

The location of the Hyatt Regency is fantastic- steps from Place de Arts and a convenient walk to Old Montreal. Our room was great and had an impressive view. The bed was very comfortable. The lobby was nice and the bar area was beautiful. We booked through Travelzoo and had free wifi and $40 credit at the self-serve wine bar, which was great. Parking was pricey but convenient.

We stayed during the workers' strike, so unfortunately the bar and pool were closed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the plaza rather than the street.

Thank you for such lovely comments. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay at our hotel! The unionized employees are no longer on strike and are back at work. All is now back to normal. I hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you back soon!

The best asset of this hotel is its location, close to everything a tourist would want. However it is not up to par as a Hyatt Regency. As has been pointed out by other reviewers, the hotel rooms need updating badly. Our room was comfortable but one can notice easily things that are about to break or fall down. Our rate includes breakfast, which is adequate but I would not pay $25 for it. There are lots of eateries right outside the hotel. The hotel charges for Internet connection, but if you go next door to Place des Arts you get free Wi-Fi connection. Out stay was right before the Jazz Festival and we did notice some noises but it was not too bad since the festival has not started.

The location can't be beat. St. Catherine and Place Des Arts right outside, Chinatown next door, Old Montreal and McGill about 15 minutes walk. There are many good places to eat, coffee, supermarket, Bixi station nearby. But that's about it. We stayed during the workers' strike, but many of the negatives is regardless of the strike.

First, valet parking was not available due to the strike, but self parking is not very convenient. It is not at the hotel property, but next door at the Complexe Desjardin mall. It is $19 per day and $10 weekend. The biggest problem here is there is no in and out privileges, so it is not very convenient if you need to frequently use your car. Fortunately many of the places we visited is within walking distance. Valet, when available, would be $30 with in-out privileges. With the strike, it would be a good gesture if the hotel validates the self-parking to allow in and out.
Secondly, there are two elevators from the underground garage, St. Urbain and Jeanne Mance. You want to park closest to the latter one, this elevator takes you to the 6th floor which is the hotel lobby. I took the other elevator and had to walk from one corner of the mall to another to catch the Jeanne Mance elevator. Of course, Hyatt didn't provide a sign in the parking garage, so we figured this out the next morning.

Like the parking elevators, the other elevators arrangement is confusing and not convenient. From the room to go outside, you take the main elevator. Press F for lobby, not P. P is not for parking but for pool. From this elevator, you walk across the lobby to another elevator which brings you down to the street level. The elevators could need some maintenance. When it starts, you can feel the jerk, like if you hold a cup of coffee it might spill. To the parking elevator, you have to go around the lobby to another set of elevators.

The lobby area is modern looking and looks nice. The receptionists are friendly and helpful. One thing that you won't miss is the presence of security personnel. There are at least three in the lobby area. Maybe this is because of the strike. They can make you feel secure, but at the same time you can feel spooked. The bar area and the back lobby looks dark, and the dark purple color scheme doesn't help either. I feel like being in a dark closed casino.

Our reservation was from Expedia, which has the stay three nights and get one night free. This also included breakfast for 3. Considering the breakfast buffet is $25 per person, this is a very good deal. The quality of the breakfast is not very good, though. The hot entrees were scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, french toast, and fries. None of them are fresh and well made. The pastries are not very fresh either. Overall, it is just slightly better than dormitory food, definitely not worth $25. During the strike, they said the executive chef, sous chef and one other chef do all the cooking. Judging at the quality, either they catered the food from somewhere, or the chefs aren't good.

The room feels comfortable and clean. There was no problem for us with cleanliness. The room and the hallway look very outdated though. The wallpapers desparately need to be replaced. I can see they are peeling in several places.

The Wifi situation is interesting. The official policy is $15 a day. But I connected in the lobby area in front of the room elevator for free. If you do this in the lobby and carry the same connection to your room, the Wifi is still connected for free in the room. But if you connect in the room without connecting at the lobby first, you'll get a login page that ask you for the fee. I speculated there are two access points, one in the lobby without login, and another one with the same Wifi name in the room floor with a login page. We managed to get free wifi throughout our stay. We have an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and a laptop connected this way.

Would I come back? For the location and if it is $100 or less, I would. Otherwise, there are several other hotels in the same general areas that are more up to date.

We were staying in Montreal for one night and had a free room with points. We enjoyed our stay last winter and weren't sure what to expect with the strike. While we have to agree the cleanliness of public areas has suffered (windows, debri on carpet), our room was clean and we didn't miss what wasn't available (although I was looking forward to the pool, but we didn't have time for it). That being said, if I was paying for the room, I would have felt differently. We actually were checked in and out by Erika, mentioned by a prior reviewer, and she was a delight - a great ambassador for Hyatt.

When in Montreal, though, location is key, and you really can't get much better than the Hyatt - you step out your door, and festivals are there, restaurants, shopping, and the lovely interactive fountain area are all right there. There are some interesting inside spaces, although it is a little klugy with having to navigate two elevators to get to and from your room from the street.

If I had kids I would not stay here during the strike - a pool is a necessity! I have to say I was very surprised that they didn't do anything to compensate guests for the subpar experience.

Positive: location and good looking lobby.
Negatives: the room are old and unkept ( dirty carpet, wall paper coming off the wall), the room amenities are sub- par for the price they charge (my top sheet had a hole). Service was poor from the moment we checked in then it got worth through our stay. We were there for 5 nights. Granted they had a strike but no towel service, no room cleaning service, no pool etc... Not an apologies, not a compensation of any kind ( we were charged full price). There is better in the same area and at the same or better rate

Room Tip: I'd rather not say

Dear Michel V:

Thank you for taking a moment to share feedback about your recent stay. We apologize for these disruptions and will do our utmost to help find solutions that meet your needs during your time at Hyatt Regency Montreal. We are presently in the process of re-negotiating our labour agreement, however our associates recently voted to strike. At Hyatt, the satisfaction and wellbeing of our associates is fundamental to the success of our business, as they are the ones who provide authentic hospitality to valued guests like you. I take personal pride in the fact that many of our associates have been here 15 years or more – they are experts at their jobs, and they are missed when they are not here. We hope to reach a resolution on our labour contracts in the very near future.

We hope this doesn't deter you from joining us at a Hyatt property again & we hope you'll give Hyatt a second chance to welcome you back.

Sincerely,

Nick B. - Guest Relations Associate

Stayed here August 22-24 2012. Even thought there was a strike by staff at the hotel - it was an overall good experience. When I arrived I was a little worried about having to "cross a picket line" to enter the hotel, but there were no issues at all - the individuals striking never said a word to us or tried to hold us up at all.

Checking in was great - Erika - at the front desk was great and politely informed us about the strike and the issues arising. I was told that the restaurant was closed and that there would be no room service and no pool. The room was cleaned, fresh towels provided and linens changed. The cleaning could have been better - but it was acceptable for our stay. I would have to agree with others, that with the strike ongoing the hotel despertly needs a real good scrub down - there are finger / hand prints on all glass doors, elevator doors etc, high traffic carpet areas need a good cleaning. The managers working are doing a great job trying to keep everything running smoothly and as normal as possible.

Our room was in great condition and as I said - it was cleaned, freash towels, and linens changed each day we were there - King bed, large window overlooking St Catherine street and overall large enough to move around in. Overall this is a nice hotel, with a decent Regency Club, but is below many other Hyatt's out there.

I tip my hat to the managers and staff for dong a great job... I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a Regency Club Room -
