“Perfect for our needs”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

We had a great stay, over Osheaga weekend. I was a little worried by some of the reviews, but our rooms were great (we were in one of the renovated Prestige rooms). Kids enjoyed the pool. Breakfast buffet was pretty cheap ($10) but OK food. Shuttle was available when we needed it, but was so close to subway we usually just walked. Proximity to subway and easy access to the concert site made it a winner for us.

We stayed here for 3 nights the end of July. Stayed in one of the updated rooms. Very nice. Free parking a bonus in Montreal. Hot and cold breakfast buttet included. Good selection of eggs, omelette, pancakes, juice, coffee etc. Lacking in fruit. Certainly a better than average breakfast. We made use of the indoor and outdoor pool. We really liked the larger and deeper outdoor pool. Easy access to the Metro either Pie IX or Viau. Easy to get downtown. Also a free shuttle bus to take you to the Metro or a nearby attraction. We purchased the package to see the Biodome and Botanical Garden. The Garden was fantastic with the special Mosaic exhibition. Very close to these attractions. Several restaurants nearby on Sherbrooke Street. We found the hotel to be quiet, though having one elevator could make for some waiting time to get upstairs.

Overall, very pleased with the price and accommodation at the Universal. Next time in Montreal, we'll certainly return here.

Stayed recently at this Hotel only due to its location near relatives.. This is a Hotel which caters for large groups, so expect noise. At the time was a large group from France celebrating ties between France and Quebec. Sole elevator was not working, so had to carry our luggage upstairs. No one in sight to advise long queue of patrons. Receptionists friendly but unhelpful. In other words, they couldn't care less. A note pinned nearby would have been helpful. Is this the kind of hospitality Quebecers offer these days? How times have changed! Breakfast was uneventful. Bed was comfortable but area very noisy with people checking in at early hours in the morning with kids running in the corridor with parents unconcerned with noise. Walls paper thin. Arrival gates at the Hotel complicated. No instructions going in or out. Will not return. Again, hotel only for convenience and part of a group. Lots of potential for improvement. We do have a duty in the tourism industry to offer the best we can. This is thumbs down!

We stayed four nights in early July and were very satisfied. We spent two days at the botanical gardens and Insectarium and used the hotel shuttle, which saved us a hefty parking fee. Both shuttle drivers were very pleasant and picked us up at the nearby metro station. The front desk and restaurant staffs were friendly and helpful. Appreciated the free parking -- most hotels charge a substantial fee; we were charged $10/night in Niagara Falls.

I hadn't been back to this hotel in many years but recent advertisement of new, redecorated rooms enticed me to visit them anew. Here is my appreciation. If you intend to visit the Montreal Botanical Gardens, the new Planetarium, or if you want to see a soccer game at the Saputo Stadium, this is the place to be. However, if you are interested in downtown Montreal, be advised that the Subway is not easily accessible. You have to walk a good ten minutes to be able to get to the nearest station (Viau). As for the hotel itself, the staff is friendly and helpful. We were a bit disappointed with the service at the restaurant for breakfast - very slow and very expensive - and so we would recommend that you bring something for a light breakfast in the room (there is a refrigerator at your disposal) or that you make sure you can find a restaurant nearby that you can go to in the morning. The rooms are clean, very clean, and very modern. There is a problem with the noise in the corridors, possibly because the doors are not well insulated. Also, we had a problem reserving a film: the total cost amounted to 1 295$, which we thought a bit heftyfor a two-hour rental...The receptionist was very cooperative and left a note to the effect that this price should not be charged....

All in all, however, our experience was positive and we would recommend this hotel if you are planning to visit some of the sites to the east of downtown Montreal.

The hotel is located very near the metro, so it's very convenient to get everywhere. The hotel also shuttles hotel goers to the metro. The building on the outside looks old and needs updating, but we booked one of their newer rooms, which was very nice. The staff was super nice and helpful in making our trip easy to plan day to day! Bartender was nice too!

The hotel looked okay, but you still got a feeling it needed some TLC.
I had to change out two blown bulbs, and a lamp was left unplugged. Even fixing all of that , the room was still in need of more light.
The doors might as well be made of cellophane with the little amount of noise they blocked.
Towels are THIN THIN THIN.
Woke up one morning to repairman fixing light outside of our room.
Internet was slow at best.

A bit too pricey for what we got, but decent location and free parking.

Room Tip: Perhaps another hotel?
